Job Summary

The HR Recruiter plays a key role in supporting employee success by contributing to both recruitment and retention efforts. This position is responsible for supporting full-cycle recruitment activities, including developing job postings, sourcing and screening candidates, and facilitating a seamless onboarding experience for new hires.
In addition to recruitment responsibilities, this role helps create and implement programs that enhance the overall employee experience and workplace culture. The HR Recruiter supports initiatives focused on onboarding effectiveness, employee engagement, and retention by ensuring new employees are well-prepared and supported in their roles.

This position also assists in identifying learning needs and developing training and development opportunities for employees, contributing to the design and delivery of engaging learning solutions for internal audiences. This position partners closely with hiring managers, HR leadership, and campus stakeholders to foster a positive and engaging environment for both candidates and employees while supporting continuous improvement in recruitment and retention practices.

Essential Job Functions

Full-Cycle Recruitment & Candidate Experience

  • Develop and post job advertisements across the university career site, job boards, and social media platforms.
  • Screen and evaluate candidate applications to ensure alignment with minimum qualifications and departmental needs.
  • Maintain consistent communication with candidates, ensuring a positive, professional, and engaging candidate experience.
  • Track requisition activity and maintain accurate recruitment records within the ATS and tracking tools.
  • Participate in job fairs, recruitment events, and outreach initiatives to support talent attraction efforts.
Offer Management & Onboarding Coordination
  • Extend employment offers and coordinate pre-employment processes (background checks, verifications, etc.).
  • Facilitate onboarding logistics and support a smooth, welcoming transition for new hires.
  • Coordinate and support New Hire Orientation sessions and onboarding activities.
  • Track onboarding progress and ensure timely completion of required steps.
Hiring Manager Support & Recruitment Strategy
  • Partner with departments to assess staffing needs and develop recruitment strategies aligned with institutional goals.
  • Train and guide hiring managers and search committees on effective, equitable, and compliant recruitment and selection practices.
  • Assist in sourcing efforts and support development of candidate pipelines.
Training, Engagement & Employee Experience Support
  • Coordinate and conduct New Hire Orientation sessions for Faculty and Staff.
  • Coordinate training sessions, onboarding programs, and employee development activities.
  • Support initiatives that enhance employee engagement, workplace culture, and retention.
  • Assist in identifying learning needs and coordinating training opportunities for employees.
Retention Initiatives & Program Evaluation
  • Support retention initiatives by gathering feedback from new hires and employees.
  • Assist in implementing programs that improve employee experience and engagement.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at increasing employee satisfaction and retention.
Data Tracking & Reporting Support
  • Track and maintain recruitment, onboarding, and training data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with university standards.
  • Track key metrics (e.g., hiring activity, onboarding completion, training participation).
  • Assist in compiling reports and identifying trends to support continuous improvement.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

    A bachelor’s degree in business or a related field, or a combination of education and experience that would produce the required knowledge and abilities, can be considered. Minimum of two years of professional experience in talent acquisition or recruitment, preferably within a higher education or similarly complex organizational environment.Comprehensive knowledge of employment practices, including federal and state labor laws, equal employment opportunity regulations, and compliance standards.Proficiency with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and resume management platforms; experience with systems commonly used in higher education is a plus.Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and evaluate recruitment strategies and outreach plans.Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting on key recruitment and HR metrics to inform decision-making and improve processes.Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and external partners.Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for recruitment events, campus visits, and professional development opportunities as needed.

  • Strong command of the end-to-end recruitment process, from developing job postings to onboarding new hires, while ensuring compliance with state/federal laws and university policies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively partner with hiring managers, engage with candidates, and represent Lamar University professionally in the community.
  • Skilled in using HR metrics (e.g., time-to-fill, source of hire) and applicant tracking systems to improve recruiting strategies and outcomes.
  • Proactive in identifying current and future hiring needs, developing sourcing strategies, and cultivating a talent pipeline.
  • The ability to inspire and lead employee experience initiatives
  • The ability to clearly convey information and ideas, both verbally and in writing, is crucial for effective training and development
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in a typical administrative office environment includes long periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 10 pounds at times.
Job Conditions: Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional after-hours work may be required. Participation in local recruiting events and campus activities is expected.

Athletics

Students can participate in or cheer on their peers in more than a dozen NCAA Division I sports. Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Join a fraternity or sorority
  • Get involved in community service
  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
