The Maintenance Mechanic works independently and collaboratively with Facilities personnel to complete assigned work orders, resolve service interruptions, support campus projects, assist with special event and operational needs, and respond to emergency maintenance situations. The position contributes to Physical Facilities' mission by protecting University assets, supporting campus continuity, promoting safe work practices, and helping ensure that facilities remain operational, accessible, and responsive to the needs of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the broader campus community.

  • Install, replace, modify, and repair building components, utilities, fixtures, equipment, and system controls in accordance with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer guidance, and University requirements.

  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, service vehicles, and specialized trade equipment in a safe, effective, and job-appropriate manner.
  • Conduct routine facility and equipment inspections to identify deficiencies, safety hazards, potential failures, and corrective maintenance needs before they result in avoidable disruptions.
  • Support campus renovation, repair, infrastructure, and minor project work by assisting with equipment installation, utility modifications, system shutdowns, start-ups, and commissioning-related tasks.
  • Respond to emergency service calls, utility outages, equipment failures, severe weather impacts, and other urgent maintenance needs to restore service, protect campus assets, and minimize disruption to University operations.

Marginal Functions

  • Assist other maintenance trades and departments with occasional specialty repairs, project support, or operational needs outside the position's primary assigned work.
  • Support campus events on an as-needed basis by assisting with temporary utility connections, facility preparations, equipment setup, and post-event restoration activities.
  • Pick up parts, materials, supplies, or equipment from vendors and suppliers when needed to complete assigned maintenance or project work.
  • Participate in periodic safety meetings, required training, certifications, and professional development activities that support safe and effective job performance.
  • Assist with occasional shop organization, inventory support, and storage area cleanup related to projects, emergency response, or operational readiness.
  • Support campus emergency response efforts and serve as a designated Tier 2 responder during emergencies, severe weather events, and special operational needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
