Job Description

Emergency Medicine - Academic Opportunities in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking outstanding candidates interested in an academic emergency medicine faculty position.  Our Department aims to be the premier academic department of emergency medicine—globally renowned for education, unrivaled patient-centered care, pioneering research, and developing the next generation of leaders in medicine.

This faculty physician position offers numerous clinical and teaching opportunities within the Department, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).  All faculty teach a range of learners including medical students, resident and fellow physicians, and advanced practice providers.

In addition, our Department maintains a strong focus on faculty development for physicians at every stage of their careers. Our highly respected team includes some of the most prominent voices in Emergency Medicine. We foster a sense of collaboration and mentorship by hosting faculty development workshops, sharing publishing opportunities, promoting speaking opportunities, and offering research support and guidance—especially to junior faculty.

While rank and tenure status depend upon each candidate’s qualifications, the anticipated rank for new hires is Assistant Professor.

Our Academic Organization:

INSTITUTIONAL RESOURCES - Our Emergency Medicine physicians are faculty members of UMSOM, the first public medical school in the United States and one of the fastest-growing, top-tier biomedical research enterprises in the world.  UMSOM generates nearly $600 million in research and development annually and consistently outpaces its peers in terms of medical research and education. In 2026, the National Science Foundation ranked UMSOM as 14th among public medical schools.

Ambitious academic physicians will appreciate the variety of interdisciplinary support and opportunities UMSOM offers, as well as its innovative medical school curriculum, which includes a required Emergency Medicine clerkship for all medical students.

TEACHING - Our physicians are dedicated to educating residents and medical students every day—and ensuring their success as future physicians. From the classroom to the bedside, our clinical educators impart knowledge, teach skills, and equip learners with the leadership and clinical judgment necessary to diagnose illnesses and treat patients in some of the most complex, high-stakes environments in medicine.

Whether leading a small group workshop or presenting at grand rounds, faculty physicians are empowered to teach—and do so much more. Opportunities abound for faculty to develop their own curricula, mentor physicians-in-training, and shape the future of medical education at UMSOM.

RESIDENCY AND FELLOWSHIPS - Our categorical and combined Emergency Medicine residencies host more than 50 resident physicians. Our program is one of the nation’s largest and most student-centered programs in the nation.

We are the only program in the country to offer training in four tracks:

  •        emergency medicine,
  •        emergency medicine/pediatrics,
  •        emergency medicine/internal medicine, and
  •        emergency medicine/internal medicine/critical care.
  • We also offer fellowships in diverse areas from emergency cardiology to faculty development, point-of-care ultrasound, health policy, and simulation, among others.

CLINICAL - Our academic practice staffs and manages Emergency Departments at four hospitals in the heart of downtown Baltimore:

  •        the University of Maryland Medical Center-Downtown Campus,
  •        the University of Maryland Medical Center-Midtown Campus,
  •        Mercy Medical Center, and
  •        the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
  • These facilities are enriched with state-of-the-art technology—from point-of-care ultrasound to hyperbaric chambers, advanced radiological and airway equipment, comprehensive stroke centers, and much more. Our patient population is diverse, urban, and underserved; caring for our neighbors in Baltimore and the patients who trust us in their greatest times of need is our honor.

RESEARCH - Our Emergency Medicine faculty are a diverse group of clinical, basic science, and epidemiologic investigators who have successfully obtained more than $16 million in grants and contracts since 2021. Our current research focuses on data analytics, health computing, critical care, clinical operations, carbon monoxide, sickle cell disease, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  In the past year, our faculty have published peer-reviewed journal articles in Science Advances and The New England Journal of Medicine, in addition to a range of esteemed publications focused on emergency medicine, hyperbaric medicine, emergency medical services, population health, critical care, and other topics.

Expected salary range for Assistant Professors is $260,000 (min) and $290,700 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range may not include all components of the Emergency Medicine faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental variable compensation programs.
