Provost of Georgetown University
Washington, DC
Georgetown University, located in Washington, D.C., is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States. Founded in 1789, and guided by Jesuit and Catholic values, the University provides a transformative educational experience on a global scale, with a campus in Qatar and robust connections to countries around the world. With a total enrollment of 23,948 (8,371 undergraduate and 15,577 graduate students), more than 3,000 faculty and 5,000 staff, and with two geographic locations in the District of Columbia--the Hilltop Campus in Georgetown and the Capitol Campus located near the U.S. Capitol--Georgetown is a vibrant and distinctive community, one where members are challenged to engage in the world and become people for others.
Georgetown boasts 10 schools and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs; professional degree programs in law, medicine, nursing, business, and public policy; and a multitude of specialized certificates and continuing education programs. Among national universities, it is ranked 24th by U.S. News & World Report. The University's budget is approximately $2 billion. Sponsored research support is approximately $195 million. The University's endowment has grown to $4.8 billion.
In the last decade, Georgetown has taken bold positions with respect to academic offerings, investments in facilities, and institutional culture. It created new programs, launched the School of Nursing and the School of Health, and established the Earth Commons, Georgetown's Institute for Environment and Sustainability. The McCourt School of Public Policy has grown significantly and relocated to the Capitol Campus--joining the Law Center, the School of Continuing Studies, the Earth Commons Institute, the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL) for undergraduates, and other interdisciplinary programs--resulting in the establishment of a robust ecosystem for experiential teaching and learning with societal impact. Following on the work of the Working Group on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation, Georgetown continues to explore, understand, and respond to the University's role in the injustice of slavery and the legacies of enslavement and segregation in the United States.
The next Provost will join this ambitious and generative institution at a consequential moment, with a new president, Eduardo Peñalver, a dynamic team of deans, a strategic planning process under way, and the continued buildout of the Capitol Campus. Georgetown seeks a Provost who will nurture academic excellence, intellectual rigor, and innovation. The Provost will work collaboratively, partnering with senior colleagues and faculty and staff to advance an academic environment that is guided by and bears witness to Georgetown's Jesuit values, social justice mission, and tradition of free inquiry. The Provost will also position Georgetown for the years ahead, championing resource generation and implementing sustainable systems and structures that serve all of Georgetown's units and activities with agility. The Provost must also help to develop the institution's strategy and approach for the use of artificial intelligence.
