Essential Job Duties:

Join our Campus Operations and Maintenance team as the Director of Environmental Services and lead an essential operation that helps create a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for our university community.

The Director of Environmental Services provides strategic leadership and overall management for a large, varied department delivering environmental services across academic, athletics, housing, hospital, research, dining, and other campus facilities. This position leads approximately 320 permanent employees and 20–40 temporary staff while overseeing a $17 million annual operating budget.
In this highly visible leadership role, you will guide departmental strategy, strengthen operational performance, manage financial and workforce resources, advance sustainability initiatives, and ensure high-quality services that support the evolving needs of the university.

Key responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide strategic leadership and overall direction for Environmental Services, developing short- and long-term business plans that align departmental operations, services, and resources with university priorities.
  • Lead and develop a varied workforce of approximately 320 permanent full-time employees and 20–40 temporary staff, including departmental leaders and managers, while fostering accountability, collaboration, professional growth, and a strong service-oriented culture.
  • Oversee the department’s approximately $17 million annual operating budget, including financial planning, long-range fiscal allocations, resource management, and identification of appropriate funding sources for operational and workforce needs.
  • Direct environmental services across a complex campus environment that includes academic, athletics, housing, hospital, research, dining, and other university facilities.
  • Provide oversight for a broad range of services, including housekeeping, floor care, pest control, indoor recycling, relamping, Universal Waste Disposal, and other specialized environmental services.
  • Develop, negotiate, and administer complex vendor contracts and service agreements, including contracted housekeeping, window washing, specialized floor care, and other outsourced services, while monitoring cost, quality, and performance expectations.
  • Establish and maintain departmental policies, standard operating procedures, service-level agreements, quality standards, and reporting practices to support consistent and responsive service delivery across campus.
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, performance management, employee relations, training, and workforce development while ensuring supervisors and managers operate in accordance with university human resources policies and practices.
  • Provide leadership in resolving employee grievances and workplace conflicts, while identifying opportunities to strengthen employee engagement, career development, succession planning, and workforce readiness.
  • Direct the department’s Green Cleaning Program and advance sustainability initiatives, environmentally responsible practices, and operational strategies that support university goals.
  • Oversee departmental procurement, material and asset management, equipment evaluation, and the selection of chemicals, tools, equipment, and other resources necessary to support effective operations.
  • Champion the implementation and effective use of technology, scheduling systems, and operational tools that improve communication, workforce deployment, efficiency, and service delivery.
  • Provide leadership and departmental coordination for emergency preparedness, business continuity planning, severe weather protocols, and other operational response efforts.
  • Partner with campus stakeholders to anticipate service needs, establish expectations, support university growth, and continuously identify opportunities to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of Environmental Services.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Facilities management or related field and seven years of professional experience of which at least three is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in a large organization that operates in an institutional setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the custodial industry with previous leadership role leading a large, complex, and varied organization.
  • IEHA certification.
  • APPA CEFP certification.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
