The Office of Legal Affairs, under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal representation and advice to the university and all of its constituent parts, including the Board of Trustees, the President, Provost, faculty and academic departments, Business and Finance, Administration and Planning, and the Wexner Medical Center among many others. As one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State is a multifaceted institution, with a sophisticated and leading-edge legal practice that touches nearly every area of law, including litigation, labor and employment, public contracting, real estate and construction, intellectual property, research and technology transfer, business transactions, taxation and benefits, administrative law, health care law, public safety and criminal law matters, federal and state constitutional and public law issues, and more.


Under the direction of the Associate Vice President and Senior Associate General Counsel, the Senior Associate General Counsel will serve a critical role in providing legal advice and strategic support for the Department of Public Safety and the Student Conduct Office. They provide legal advice on significant matters related to the work and operations of these offices, including but not limited to civil rights matters, criminal and public safety issues, student discipline, significant investigations, and crisis incident response. The Senior Associate General Counsel will also provide legal advice and guidance to the university’s Clery Act Coordinator and university units on Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act compliance. The Senior Associate General Counsel serves as the legal liaison to senior leaders on these matters and advises on related significant policy development and policy application, as well as significant legislative and regulatory developments. This individual serves as main legal contact for university stakeholders in order to facilitate adherence to legal obligations and internal policies; serves as a key legal advisor and liaison among internal business units and concessionaires to negotiate and implement the university's policy development in multiple areas including public safety and student conduct.


The Senior Associate General Counsel advises university leadership on legal obligations and university policy in support of university-wide emergencies and crisis-management situations and is responsible for identifying and addressing issues, building consensus, and achieving resolution that is beneficial to the university for complex legal matters pertaining to the university safety. The Senior Associate General Counsel will serve as a legal liaison within the Office of Legal Affairs to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies on a wide variety of matters, including subpoenas, investigations and search warrants. The Senior Associate General Counsel will also participate on and/or lead special projects as assigned by the Associate Vice President and Senior Associate General Counsel. The individual in this position must have approval of the Ohio Attorney General's office prior to appointment.


Required Qualifications:

J.D. The successful candidate must have graduated from an accredited law school and be a member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less. A minimum of eight (8) years of legal practice is required. Significant previous legal experience with public safety and/or law enforcement is required.


Desired Qualifications:

Previous experience with public entities (in particular public universities), public law issues (such as public records law and ethics laws), student disciplinary matters and/or white-collar criminal matters is desired. All University attorneys are expected to work at the highest professional level with integrity, excellent judgment, attention to detail, and discretion, and to demonstrate the highest personal and leadership characteristics of teamwork, inclusiveness, calmness, and adaptability to a broad range of issues, people, and situations.
