Department
Postdoctoral Researcher in Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics
The Webster Lab in the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher. Our lab investigates individual variation: we seek to understand why genetically identical individuals in a shared environment vary for both molecular and organismal phenotypes, and we then determine how genotype and environment can regulate this variation. We combine computational genomics, molecular biology, and experiments in Caenorhabditis elegans to address these questions. The successful candidate will help shape a project aligned with their interests and career goals. Projects may be fully computational or may combine bioinformatics with laboratory experiments. Funding for the position will be provided through either our lab's NSF CAREER award or startup funds, depending on the planned project.
ResponsibilitiesThe postdoctoral researcher will analyze large genomic datasets, develop reproducible analysis pipelines, contribute to manuscripts and presentations, and collaborate with other members of the lab. The position requires thoughtful and efficient use of modern coding assistants as part of computational work, together with careful validation, documentation, and version control. Depending on the project and the candidate’s interests, responsibilities may also include designing and conducting experiments with C. elegans, mentoring junior researchers, and contributing to grant proposals. The position may be fully computational, or may be a split between computational and wetlab work; in either case, proficiency with bioinformatic analysis is a must.
QualificationsA Ph.D. completed by the position’s start date in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, or a closely related field
- Experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing data using bioinformatics
- Proficiency in at least one relevant programming language, such as R or Python
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively and to communicate research effectively
- Experience working with C. elegans
- Experience with transcriptomic, epigenomic, or population-genomic sequencing data
- Experience developing reproducible computational workflows
- Interest in combining computational analysis with molecular or organismal experiments
The lab is committed to supportive, individualized mentoring. The postdoctoral researcher and principal investigator will establish a mentoring plan and revisit it regularly through one-on-one meetings. Mentoring will include support for research independence, publishing, conference participation, fellowship and grant applications. Postdoctoral scholars have access to career-development programs, networking, travel awards, and other resources through FSU’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. They may participate in the FSU Postdoctoral Association. Candidates interested in teaching may also pursue opportunities to serve as an instructor of record for a course, subject to departmental need and approval.
Contact InfoQuestions may be directed to Amy Webster. Additional information about the lab is available here.
