The Computer Science hire may emphasize computer architecture, processor and accelerator design, embedded and real-time systems,hardware-software co-design, intelligent medical devices, low-power VLSI/ASIC design, or neuromorphic and cognitive computing for real-time neural processing and closed-loop control. The position will have secondary affiliation with participating units in the cluster.

UNC Computer Science is a vibrant, collaborative department with a strong record of innovation in both core and applied computing. Our mission is to advance the frontiers of computer science, translate ideas into impactful technologies, and provide outstanding education and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We value interdisciplinary research that bridges subfields of computing and addresses pressing societal challenges. Faculty enjoy rich opportunities for collaboration across UNC, including with nationally recognized programs in medicine, public health, and the humanities and social sciences. The department maintains strong connections with the new School of Data and Informational Sciences (SDIS) and supports cross-campus initiatives in data-driven discovery and computational scholarship. Candidates are encouraged to describe how their research, teaching, and mentoring will foster interdisciplinary partnerships and broaden the impact of computer science at UNC.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Computer Science is one of 16 science departments and curricula in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a major research department with more than 35 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 11 teaching-track faculty, 12 research faculty, and 17 adjunct faculty, serving more than a thousand undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Nearly 250 graduate students and nine EHRA non-faculty members assist with teaching and research activities. Additionally, 15 SHRA positions, including technical and administrative personnel, support the department’s infrastructure. Our guiding research principle is collaboration, as it has been since the department’s founding in 1964. We believe that computer science’s greatest impact lies in working with other scientists to solve problems in their respective disciplines. As such, we actively seek opportunities to initiate new research with colleagues across campus, including in the sciences, medicine, and the humanities. Many computer science faculty members hold adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from other universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and around the world.
