Position OverviewThe University of Kansas (KU) Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) seeks outstanding candidates for two tenured or tenure-track faculty positions, one at the rank of Assistant Professor and a second position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in architectural engineering. The focus areas for these positions are in building electrical power systems and the broader energy areas described below. The successful candidates are expected to contribute to the continued development of academic and research programs in architectural engineering and to the broader research community.

For the building electrical power systems position, relevant expertise may include building electrical power distribution and utilization; electrical system design for commercial and institutional buildings; power quality, reliability, and resilience; emergency and standby power systems; distributed energy resources and microgrids; grid modernization; smart building electrical systems; and advanced sensing, monitoring, and controls for building power systems. The successful candidate in this area will strengthen the program's research and teaching capacity in building electrical and power systems and contribute to engagement with industry and the profession.

The broader energy areas of interest include integrated building or district energy systems; building-to-grid integration and grid-interactive buildings; distributed energy resource management; building energy resilience; building energy efficiency and decarbonization; environmentally sustainable buildings; renewable energy systems for buildings and communities; grid reliability and energy infrastructure; and net-zero-energy buildings.

Successful candidates must have an earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to develop collaborative, externally funded research programs and to design and teach high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses. The anticipated starting date is August 18, 2027. Successful candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

These positions are subject to a collective bargaining agreement between the University of Kansas and the United Academics of KU, the exclusive representative for the bargaining unit. Faculty have the right to be a member or not be a member of UAKU without fear of personal or professional repercussions.

The CEAE Department (https://ceae.ku.edu/) currently has 26 tenured/tenure-track faculty, four teaching professors and professors of practice, one research professor, and approximately 360 undergraduate students and 140 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelor’s, master's, and doctoral degrees. The department has a strong history of conducting impactful research while focusing on the success of students at all levels. KU's ABET-accredited architectural engineering program benefits from the university's close proximity to the Kansas City metro area, which is home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of architectural, engineering, and construction firms. Job Description:

40% Teaching
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in architectural engineering. Develop courses and participate in curriculum development. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students throughout the course of their studies.

40% Research
Develop and conduct an innovative research program in building electrical power systems or one of the broader energy areas associated with the positions. Relevant areas include building electrical power systems; integrated building or district energy systems; building-to-grid integration and grid-interactive buildings; distributed energy resource management; grid modernization; building energy resilience; building energy efficiency and decarbonization; environmentally sustainable buildings; renewable energy systems for buildings and communities; grid reliability and energy infrastructure; and net-zero-energy buildings. Establish a strong research agenda leading to external grant support and publication in recognized refereed journals, and participate in local, national, and international professional conferences and other activities appropriate to the discipline. Supervise M.S. and Ph.D. studies.

20% Service
Perform service activities normally expected of university faculty commensurate with rank, including committee service to the Department, School, and University. Also includes national and international service to the profession.Required QualificationsAll ranks:
  1. Earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering or a closely-related discipline by the time of appointment.
  2. Demonstrable expertise in one or more of the following areas: building electrical power systems; integrated building or district energy systems; building-to-grid integration and grid-interactive buildings; distributed energy resource management; grid modernization; building energy resilience; building energy efficiency and decarbonization; environmentally sustainable buildings; renewable energy systems for buildings and communities; grid reliability and energy infrastructure; or net-zero-energy buildings. Candidates considered for the building electrical power systems position must demonstrate expertise in that area and the ability to contribute to architectural engineering coursework in building electrical systems and power engineering.
  3. Ability to communicate ideas effectively and work well with others as demonstrated through application materials and interview.
  4. Demonstrated potential to develop an externally-funded research program and to design and teach high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses.

At the rank of Associate Professor:
  1. Sustained record of scholarship and research;
  2. Evidence of national recognition in the field;
  3. Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams;
  4. A minimum of five years of post-Ph.D. professional experience in a faculty role or an equivalent combination of academic and relevant industry/practice experience.

At the rank of Professor:
  1. Sustained record of scholarship and research;
  2. Evidence of national and international recognition in the field;
  3. Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams;
  4. A minimum of ten years of post-Ph.D. professional experience in a faculty role or an equivalent combination of academic and relevant industry/practice experience, with a sustained record of leadership.
