Position OverviewThe General Maintenance and Repair Technician is an essential member of the Facilities team, helping ensure the KU Edwards Campus remains safe, reliable, and welcoming for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This hands-on position performs troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance to support the daily operation of campus buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure.

Working independently, the technician identifies and resolves mechanical, structural, and safety issues and performs a wide range of maintenance duties, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting, construction, and general building repairs. The position is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment, while also supporting campus events and the needs of faculty, staff, students, and external organizations utilizing campus facilities.

Job Description70% Responsible for campus maintenance
  • Maintain the appearance of the building and grounds.
  • Under direction of supervisor, assists in specific preventative maintenance and repairs to ensure that all mechanical systems are in good working order, such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.
  • Install, operate, repair, and maintain all mechanical systems as directed.
  • Part of essential staff that are responsible for snow removal: removing snow from sidewalks, entryways, etc. Apply ice melt to all appropriate surfaces per direction of the Facilities Manager. Place appropriate signage as necessary (i.e.- slippery when wet).
  • Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly system checks, such as HVAC, lights, emergency equipment, etc.
  • Complete the necessary paperwork associated with assigned projects.
  • Help with grounds work, pulling weeds, trimming bushes/trees, removing outdoor trash.
  • Digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.
  • Operate work issued vehicles for transporting equipment and materials.
25% Events/Class setups
  • Coordinate with events team and supervisor to ensure setup and other resources are complete for both external and internal events.
  • Setup and configures classrooms for KU classes.
  • Provide equipment and set up as requested by external clients for day of needs.
  • Assist with access to space as requested by events team or supervisor.
  • Replace markers and erasers in classrooms.
5% Perform other duties as assigned
  • Perform other related maintenance work as assigned.
  • Assist in supporting other operational areas and work units as needed.

Position Requirements
  1. Ability to kneel, squat, bend, lift, climb and stand for prolonged periods of time.
  2. Reach, grasp, hold, lift and place moderately heavy loads and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs.) with or without accommodation.
  3. Must be willing and able to work a varied and be able to respond to after-hours emergencies if needed. (Days, nights, and weekends)
  4. Must have a valid driver's license and maintain the license through employment.
Required Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  2. Two years’ experience in maintenance work using basic power tools, hand tools, and cleaning equipment. Certificate from a vocational school or an associate's degree in a building or mechanical trade area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  3. Experience working with individuals and teams from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, as evidenced in application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ability to follow English oral and written instructions as made evident in work history and application materials.
  2. Experience that involved working alone with minimal supervision, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Ability to apply reason to solve problems independently, as evidenced in application materials and previous experience.
  4. Knowledge of standard practices, tools, equipment, and materials associated with a variety of skilled crafts and building trades, as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Experience with office computer systems including Microsoft Suite: Outlook, Word, and Excel; Zoom and related technologies, as evidenced in application materials.
