Our West Campus is located at 2400 Gillionville Road, Albany, GA 31707. Our East Campus is located at 504 College Drive, Albany, GA 31705. The Human Resources office for both campuses is located on the West Campus in Building K, Suite 209.

Job Summary

The Albany State University Office of Human Resources is seeking a motivated junior or senior to join our team through the Student Employment and Experiential Learning (SEEL) program, funded by Title III and coordinated by ASU Career Services. This is not a traditional student job. The SEEL HR Assistant will work alongside HR professionals as a contributing member of the team, gaining hands-on experience across the full employee lifecycle, including talent acquisition, onboarding, HR operations and records, employee engagement, and workforce data.

Over the course of the academic year, the SEEL HR Assistant will take on progressively greater responsibility, from supporting day-to-day HR operations to owning a defined semester project that is presented to HR leadership. Participants will handle confidential information with discretion, use professional HR technology and tools, and build the judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills employers expect from new graduates.

This role is designed to prepare students for life after graduation. Participants will receive structured mentoring from HR staff, regular performance feedback, and workforce readiness development, and will leave with documented, resume-ready accomplishments, professional references, and a clear view of career pathways in human resources and related fields, all while earning income on campus.

Responsibilities
  • Talent Acquisition: Assist with the recruitment process by preparing and posting job announcements, coordinating interview schedules and logistics, tracking applicant status, and corresponding professionally with candidates and hiring managers.
  • Onboarding: Prepare new-hire materials, assist with new employee orientation logistics, and help ensure onboarding checklists and required documentation are complete and accurate.
  • HR Operations and Records: Perform accurate data entry and audits in the HR information system and personnel records, and maintain organized, confidential files in accordance with University and University System of Georgia records requirements.
  • Data and Reporting: Compile and analyze HR data using Microsoft Excel or similar tools, and help prepare summary reports, charts, and dashboards on recruitment, onboarding, and engagement activity.
  • Employee Engagement: Help plan, promote, and evaluate employee recognition, wellness, professional development, and engagement initiatives, including gathering participant feedback and reporting results.
  • Research and Communications: Research HR best practices, policies, and employment law topics as assigned, and draft clear, professional communications such as emails, flyers, FAQs, and website or newsletter content for review.
  • Client Service: Serve as a first point of contact for employees, applicants, and visitors, responding to routine inquiries and referring complex or sensitive matters to the appropriate HR professional.
  • Semester Project: Plan and complete a defined HR project from start to finish (for example, a process improvement, a survey summary, or a resource guide) and present findings and recommendations to HR leadership.
  • Confidentiality: Handle personnel, applicant, and student information with the highest level of discretion, and comply with FERPA, University confidentiality expectations, and all applicable policies.
  • Professional Development: Participate in SEEL workforce readiness activities, set learning goals with the supervisor, take part in regular performance check-ins, and maintain a log of projects and accomplishments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled full-time at Albany State University and classified as a junior or senior.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and in good academic and conduct standing with the University.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) or comparable tools.
  • Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of up to 19 hours for the academic year.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Major in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Management, Psychology, Communications, or a related field.
  • Prior work, internship, or leadership experience, including student organizations, in an office or customer-facing setting.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in human resources, higher education administration, or organizational leadership.

Organization

Albany State University is a four-year institution in southwest Georgia offering undergraduate and graduate liberal arts and professional degree programs, and a wide range of outreach programs to the community. Albany State University is located in Albany, a progressive city of 100,000, on a 206-acre campus featuring impressive new buildings. Both traditional and non-traditional students make up the more than 4,000 students who attend Albany State. They come primarily from southwest and middle Georgia, Atlanta, other states in the U.S., and several foreign countries. The average student age is 24 and about 40 percent of the students live in on-campus housing.

Albany State offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs, of which the most popular majors are biology, criminal justice, computer science, middle-grades education, business administration and nursing. The University offers six advanced degrees: the master of science in criminal justice, master of public administration, master of business administration, master of science in nursing, master of education in 11 majors, and an education specialist degree. The university also offers the Board of Regents' engineering transfer program and the dual degree program in engineering with Georgia Tech.

Students at Albany State stay busy after class by participating in 59 clubs and organizations including bands, choirs, religious groups, honor societies, several major Greek and honor sororities and fraternities, and ROTC. An NCAA Division II school, Albany State's intercollegiate sports include men's football, basketball, baseball, track and field, cross-country and women's basketball, volleyball, cross-country and track and field.

A historically black institution, Albany State was founded in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute and supported by private religious organizations. It remained privately supported through 1917, when it began to receive state support and became the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. It continued to grow and in 1932, when the Board of Regents was established, it became part of the University System of Georgia. The mission was expanded in 1943, and it became a four-year college and assumed the name Albany State College. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program and in 1996 its name was changed to Albany State University.
