SUMMARY:
The Academic Computing Specialist (ACS) works closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure the classrooms and computers labs (public and departmental) provide an excellent instructional environment. Works to support the software and hardware needs for academic computing across the university campus. The Academic Computing Specialist (ATC) also works closely with other groups in Information Services (Help Desk, Media Support, Networking, Systems and Operations) to support and maintain academic computing.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical support and assistance to faculty, staff, and students with regards to software applications in academic environments to include Installation and configuration of general and departmental specific software, Diagnose and resolve issues related to software and/or hardware.
- Build, deploy, and maintain computer images for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate statistics for hardware inventory, software allocation and usage, lab and classroom usage.
- Track and coordinate assigned asset replacement cycles.
- Supervise and train student assistants.
- Assist the manager in providing communication to the university community about outage and upgrades (5%).
- Work directly with vendors for technical support of software and hardware (10%).
- Collaborate with other information services departments (Media Support Services, Help Desk, Networking, and System Groups) to create and provide quality academic computing environments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, skills & ability:
- Excellent skills in all phases of desktop management
- Ability to read, comprehend, produce, and maintain technical documentation
- Ability to work both independently and within groups
- Expert knowledge of Windows and Mac operating systems, certifications preferred
- Some knowledge of Linux operating systems
- Excellent listening, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
- This position will oversee a group of student assistants that work in public labs and provide technical support to the Academic Computing Services staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- This position will work extensively with computer hardware and software.
- Individual must be able to sit and read a computer screen for extended periods.
- Frequently required to walk across campus.
- Ability to safely lift and carry computer equipment weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
- Occasionally work after hours and weekends as required to meet project deadlines and respond to critical situations.
Education & experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience
- Experience in supporting a multi-user computer environment
- Familiarity with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, LANS, Windows and MAC Servers, Wireless technologies
Work Schedule:
- Full-time; Nonexempt
- Monday-Friday 8:30AM-5:00PM
Pay Structure:
Pay Grade 6 Hourly ($24.26 to $32.14 per hour)
