About the College/Unit/Department:

The Victoria Kay Ivester School of Nursing at the University of Georgia is a new academic school established to advance nursing education, research, practice, and service while helping address the health and healthcare workforce needs of Georgia and beyond. As part of Georgia’s flagship land-grant university, the Ivester School of Nursing is building a community of nurse educators, clinicians, scientists, and leaders committed to preparing an exceptionally qualified nursing workforce and generating knowledge that improves health and healthcare. The School’s mission emphasizes innovative teaching, scholarly inquiry, clinical excellence, and statewide service, with particular attention to the needs of rural, underserved, and rapidly growing communities.

The Ivester School of Nursing will welcome its inaugural students into nursing coursework in fall 2027 and is developing undergraduate and future graduate programs designed to prepare nurses, advanced practice nurses, educators, and scientists. A new School of Nursing building is planned for the UGA Health Sciences Campus, providing a future home for nursing education, simulation, research, and collaboration. The School is intentionally building a strong research enterprise, with tenure-track faculty expected to develop sustained programs of externally funded research and clinical faculty contributing scholarship in education, practice, quality improvement, and implementation.

The College of Family and Consumer Sciences is committed to student success, holistic development and inclusive perspective taking. FACS develops leaders who focus on the science and art of helping individuals live well in a complex society. The Department of Nutritional Sciences is one of four departments in the College. The Department has 21 full-time and 3 part-time faculty, 408 undergraduate students majoring in Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics, as well as, 31 graduate students in the PhD and MS thesis graduate degree programs and 58 in the non-thesis MS degree programs including the on-line MS program in Community Nutrition.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences has strong ties and opportunities for interdisciplinary research programs with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Animal and Dairy Sciences, Kinesiology, Pharmacy, Food Science and Technology, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine, Gerontology, Psychology, the Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute and others. The University of Georgia is one of four institutions participating in the NIH-funded Georgia Clinical & Translational Alliance which leverages complementary strengths to accelerate clinical and translational research. The Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU) located on the UGA Health Sciences Campus, supports investigators to conduct clinical and translational studies. In addition, health-related programing is disseminated and community-based participatory research is conduced though UGA Cooperative Extension. Department-based specialists in cooperation with county-based agents extend lifelong learning to the people of Georgia through research-based education on issues related to food and health, money, family and home. FACS Extension helps to improve the health of Georgians.

Applicants must hold an earned doctoral degree in nutrition or a related scientific field.

Position Summary:

Associate Professor of Nutritional Sciences and Nursing (45% Research, 50% Teaching, 5% Service), 9-month academic year tenure-track appointment with a joint appointment in the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (60% appointment) and the Victoria Key Ivestor School of Nursing (40% appointment).

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
1) Develop a nationally recognized and externally-funded program focused on the role of nutrition and/or nutritional interventions in the prevention and management of chronic disease, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, or other diet-related chronic diseases;
2) Direct and support research programs of PhD- and MS-level students;
3) Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in nutritional sciences both in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and in the School of Nursing;
4) Engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research with faculty in the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the School of Nursing, as well as other UGA departments/colleges;
5) Contribute to activities that serve the department, college, school, university, the public and the profession.

Additional Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have attained tenure at a comparable university or have at least four years of experience at the Assistant Professor rank; demonstrate scholarly competence and research productivity in chronic disease prevention research as evidenced by a high quality research publication record and a record of success with external funding; and demonstrate clear and convincing evidence of emerging stature as a regional or national authority as appropriate for the position. To be eligible for tenure on appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Any request for tenure upon appointment must be approved before hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates credentialed as a registered dietitian nutritionist by the Commission on Dietetics are preferred.
