Position Description:The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University invites applications for one full-time, nine-month faculty position in Special Education. The position may be filled at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure, or Professor with tenure beginning fall 2027.
We seek a scholar with a clearly identifiable program of research focused on Special Education and improving educational opportunities and outcomes for individuals with disabilities. The successful candidate should be able to contribute to teaching across multiple Special Education program areas (i.e., Special Education generalist). Candidates from all areas of Special Education are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate Special Education programs and to the preparation of Special Education teachers and other professionals who serve individuals with disabilities. The candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, maintain an active program of research, advise and mentor students, contribute to program development, and provide service and leadership within the program, department, university, and profession. Courses are offered on campus, hybrid, and online (synchronous and asynchronous) during the day and in the evening.
Appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank will require meeting Texas State University and Department of Curriculum and Instruction standards for appointment with tenure.
RESPONSIBILITIESKey responsibilities include:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate Special Education courses, including courses supporting teacher preparation and certification, across in-person, hybrid, and online modalities; developing or revising courses as program needs arise.
- Supervising teacher candidates in field-based or clinical teaching experiences.
- Maintaining an active and focused program of research that results in peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations.
- Seeking external funding to support research and/or personnel-preparation activities, as appropriate.
- Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
- Contributing to the continued development and improvement of the Special Education programs.
- Supporting program activities related to educator preparation, state requirements, accreditation, and alignment to professional standards.
- Providing service and leadership to the Special Education program, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education, university, and profession.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTThe Department of Curriculum and Instruction is located within the College of Education at Texas State University. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare educators and other professionals to support learning and student success across educational settings. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
- Earned doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution by the start date. Applicants who are completing their dissertations may apply but must have the degree conferred by the start date of August 16, 2027.
- A clearly identifiable program of research focused on Special Education or the education of individuals with disabilities.
- Evidence of peer-reviewed scholarly productivity.
- Evidence of effective university teaching.
- Evidence of the ability to contribute to undergraduate and graduate Special Education programs, including Special Education teacher preparation.
- Three or more years of professional experience in PK–12 educational settings supporting students with disabilities or other specialized learning needs, such as experience as a Special Education teacher, school psychologist, dyslexia specialist, educational diagnostician, behavior specialist, or in a comparable role.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR or PROFESSORApplicants seeking appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank must hold the current rank of Associate of Professor, an earned doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution and meet all other required qualifications for Assistant Professor, as well as the following:
- A clearly identifiable and sustained program of research focused on Special Education or the education of individuals with disabilities.
- A record of sustained peer-reviewed scholarly productivity.
- A record of effective university teaching.
- A record of contributing to Special Education teacher preparation or other educator-preparation programs.
- A record of professional service.
- Current rank of Associate Professor or Professor
- Accomplishments sufficient to meet Texas State University and Department of Curriculum and Instruction standards for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank with tenure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
- University teaching experience in Special Education or a closely related area.
- Evidence of potential for securing external funding for research or personnel preparation.
- Experience contributing to educator-preparation or teacher-certification programs.
- Experience developing or participating in partnerships with schools, districts, or other educational organizations.
- Evidence of potential for mentoring graduate students.
- Possession of one or more professional certifications, licenses, or specialized credentials relevant to Special Education or related services (e.g., Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Certified Academic Language Therapist, transition-related certification, National Board Certification, or a comparable credential).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR or PROFESSOR
- A record of securing external funding for research or personnel preparation.
- Experience mentoring and advising graduate students and serving on graduate committees.
- Experience providing leadership in educator preparation, program development, accreditation, or teacher certification.
- Experience developing and sustaining partnerships with schools, districts, educational agencies, or professional organizations.
- Possession of one or more professional certifications, licenses, or specialized credentials relevant to Special Education or related services (e.g., Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Certified Academic Language Therapist, transition-related certification, National Board Certification, or a comparable credential).
