The ISSS Department is seeking (1) International Student Advisor to join the already awesome team taking them to the next level of excellence!
The International Student Advisor (ISA) provides in person and virtual student advising related to F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations and University policies and deadlines using compliance software to maintain appropriate documentation, communication, and student support. The advisor works collaboratively with various admissions offices to issue initial attendance and transfer I-20s to newly admitted international students, and helps manage onboarding communication, processes and support for incoming students. The ISA will utilize the Sunapsis immigration compliance software and Banner system to review student requests, run relevant reports, issue documents, and manage their daily work. The ISA works as part of the student advising team in ISSS to educate international students on their immigration status and regulations and to assist them in meeting their academic and personal goals.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO
Provide in person student advising related to F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations and University policies and deadlines using compliance software (Sunapsis) to maintain appropriate documentation, communication, and student support. Advises students in areas of federal immigration regulations, registration, maintaining status, finances, employment, etc. Remain current on federal immigration changes, access to advising resources, and key governmental, campus, and community contacts.
Manage and respond to alerts and student requests within ISSS' immigration compliance software (Sunapsis), create and update eforms, and keep up to date with software functionality in order to best serve students.
Work collaboratively with various admissions offices to issue initial attendance and transfer I-20s to newly admitted international students as needed.
Provide SAVE verification for nonresident aliens admitted to GSU after admission
Assist with lawful presence processes
Help review applications for need-based tuition waivers
Assist with any international recruitment initiatives/communications
Present employment workshops/sessions for students
Design and present immigration and other sessions during international student orientation
Help update office website, social media accounts and other forms of communication to continuously provide accurate and timely information to students.
Create and maintain relationships with key partner offices (advising, student accounts, registrar, counseling center, etc) to provide quality referrals as needed.
Assists other international offices on campus (International English Program, Office of International Initiatives, etc) with services, events, and programs in service of the University's internationalization goals.
Serve on various committees as needed to help increase international student engagement on campus.
At all times, advocate for students in the university and Atlanta community
Effectively gather data regarding relevant office services, and student compliance, engagement, retention and graduation
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree and one year of experience; or a combination of education and related experience. Must meet the federal guidelines for becoming a Designated School Official for Georgia State University.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
- Meet the Department of Homeland Security's requirements for Designation School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO).
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in International Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
- One to two years of experience advising international students in a higher education setting.
- Prior experience working in an ISSS office or with SEVIS-related compliance and reporting.
- Strong understanding of U.S. immigration regulations, especially F-1 and J-1 visa categories.
- Experience with SEVIS, batch processing systems (e.g., Sunapsis, Terra Dotta, ISSM, etc.), and federal compliance reporting.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex immigration regulations in a clear and supportive manner.
- Empathy, patience, and a student-centered advising philosophy.

Founded in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia State University is the second-largest and one of four research institutions in the University System of Georgia. In addition to the numerous degree programs, Georgia State offers full- and part-time programs and day, evening and weekend classes.
Students have many choices in extracurricular activities including more than 22 fraternities and sororities; and some 250 chartered student groups, including 60 degree-related student groups, seven religious, 24 law-oriented and 22 multicultural/international groups; and 10 honor societies. There is also an active student government association which includes the student senate and the judicial board.
The Georgia State Panthers are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and compete in 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and volleyball. The university announced in April 2008 that is will begin Division I-AA football in 2010.
The university’s innovative Touch the Earth program brings outdoor recreation ranging from backpacking, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, rafting and water-skiing to out-of-state snow-skiing and snorkeling trips. And WRAS, Georgia State’s popular 100,000-watt radio voice, is the most powerful student-run radio station in the United States.
