Job Title:Communications Graphic Design Student

Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory is seeking a talented student graphic designer to join our communications team and help visually tell the stories of research, education, and outreach programs that protect and improve Ohio's water resources. This hands-on position offers the opportunity to gain real-world design experience while collaborating with communicators, researchers, educators, and fellow creatives on a variety of meaningful projects. The student will develop professional work for both digital and print platforms while helping connect audiences with important environmental topics.

As a Student Graphic Designer, you'll create visual content that educates and engages audiences. Responsibilities include:

  • Designing marketing and recruitment materials, including email graphics, brochures, flyers, and promotional pieces for Stone Lab courses and programs.
  • Creating educational displays and exhibit materials on environmental topics such as fisheries, invasive species, water quality, wetlands, and Great Lakes ecosystems.
  • Updating and redesigning existing publications using Ohio State brand standards and accessibility (ADA) best practices.
  • Developing graphics and visual storytelling elements for social media, websites, digital communications, and outreach campaigns.
  • Creating animations and motion graphics that translate scientific research and environmental topics into engaging visual content for social media, web stories, and digital outreach.
  • Collaborating with the communications team to transform complex research findings into compelling visuals and multimedia content.
  • Assisting with the layout and design of fact sheets, posters, presentations, and other outreach materials.
  • Create ebook of several publications

Additional Information:

This is an excellent opportunity for a graphic design student to gain professional experience while building a diverse portfolio of creative work. You'll develop skills in branding, digital and print design, motion graphics, visual storytelling, accessibility, and science communication while contributing to projects that support research, education, and environmental stewardship across Ohio and the Great Lakes region. The position offers the chance to create work across multiple platforms, from publications and exhibits to social media graphics and animated content.

Ohio Sea Grant is part The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) School of Environment and Natural Resources, Ohio State University Extension, and NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 34 Sea Grant programs nation-wide dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources. Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie and is the research, education, and outreach facility of Ohio Sea Grant and part of CFAES School of Environment and Natural Resources.
