Department Summary

The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) moves science to action on the front lines of environmental progress. Using Los Angeles and California as a testbed, IoES develops solutions for the broader world, and our commitment to effective communication ensures that those ideas are heard. With our research centers and field stations, plus extensive partnerships across UCLA, IoES has local, national, and global reach. We work closely with campus leaders including the Emmett Institute on Climate Change, the Luskin Center for Public Policy, and the Anderson School of Management. These collaborations bring together diverse talent to focus on today's most urgent environmental problems.
Position Summary

IoES is looking for a Research Assistant who will engage in community-engaged geochemical and environmental justice-related research, education, outreach, and communications. The incumbent will contribute to GIS and STEM data analysis for literature reviews and reports, provide administrative support to related research and program activities, work with community partners, and mentor and train others on entry-level tasks. The incumbent will assist in presenting research and preparing communication materials, and will serve as a research assistant supporting active projects spanning geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, environmental justice, and community health.


Salary & Compensation

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of environmental science, geoscience, GIS, and/or geochemistry sufficient to support research activities. (Required)
  • Experience with climate justice, environmental justice, and/or youth organizing. (Required)
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, education, and outreach. (Required)
  • Experience with atmospheric chemistry concepts and/or data. (Required)
  • Familiarity with GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and the ability to learn geospatial analysis procedures. (Required)
  • Ability to learn and apply scientific procedures and protocols appropriate to the particular research being conducted. (Required)
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to adapt across scientific, community, and non-scientific audiences. (Required)
  • Strong verbal communication skills with persons of various cultural and educational backgrounds. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, Google Workspace, and Zoom. (Required)
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks. (Required)
  • Bilingual English/Spanish. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of UCLA regulations and research compliance procedures. (Preferred)

  • Bachelor's Degree in environmental science, geoscience, environmental policy, education, or related field, and / or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Preferred)
