Be a Tar Heel!:The Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks applications from individuals with exceptional teaching credentials for a full-time, teaching-track position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor.
Successful candidates will be prepared to teach a range of foundational undergraduate computer science courses.We are searching for a candidate who can contribute to foundational undergraduate teaching while also bringing expertise in one or more of the following areas: ethics and society, artificial intelligence, AI engineering, software engineering, systems, robotics, computer architecture, and verification.The successful candidate will use evidence-based pedagogical practices and instructional technologies to support effective teaching, including in high-enrollment courses. Responsibilities will include developing course materials and assessments; training, mentoring, and supervising undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants; and contributing to undergraduate curriculum development and departmental service. Opportunities to teach Honors courses and in study abroad programs will be available in accordance with the candidate’s skills and interests. Formal academic research is welcome but not requisite for teaching-track faculty.
This is a permanent, state-appropriated faculty line with an initial three-year appointment and subsequent renewal terms of up to five years. The position offers a promotion path to Teaching Associate Professor and Teaching Professor. The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2027.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a uniquely rich history of excellence and leadership in teaching and research. As the second-oldest freestanding computer science department in the nation and the third-largest undergraduate major at UNC-Chapel Hill, it now enrolls more than 1,000 undergraduate majors between its Bachelor’s of Science and Bachelor’s of Arts degree programs and employs eleven (11) teaching-track faculty, twelve (12) research faculty, and more than 35 tenured/tenure-track faculty. This is a full-time, teaching-track position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor. Successful candidates will be prepared to teach a range of foundational computer science and/or artificial intelligence courses. Opportunities to teach upper-division courses, Honors courses, and in study abroad programs will be available in accordance with each candidate’s skills and interests. Ideal candidates will be able to employ evidence-based pedagogical methods and instructional technologies to effectively teach large classes; train, utilize, and mentor undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants; and participate in the development of undergraduate curricula. Engagement in formal academic research is welcome but optional for teaching-track faculty. This position is a state-appropriated, permanent faculty line with an initial term of three years, to be renewed thereafter for terms of up to five years. It offers a promotion path to Teaching Associate Professor and Teaching Professor.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Candidates must hold at least a Master’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field before the start date of the position and have instructor-of-record experience or a minimum of two (2) semesters of academic teaching assistantship experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Candidates should have demonstrable experience with evidence-based pedagogical practices. Experience teaching large courses and employing evidence-based instructional interventions, innovations, and/or technologies to teach at scale is desired.

Please submit: A cover letter summarizing your teaching experience and interests, including the areas above in which you could contribute. A curriculum vitae detailing all courses taught, including enrollments. A two-page statement of teaching philosophy and practices, ideally including discussion of pedagogical approaches to engaging students in high-enrollment university courses.
Selected applicants will be invited to submit a short teaching video responding to a common introductory-computing prompt. Further instructions will be provided with the invitation. Videos will be evaluated for technical accuracy, clarity, and suitability for undergraduate learners. A subset of applicants will then be invited to a 30-minute Zoom interview. At this stage, candidates will be asked to provide two reference letters, including at least one addressing their teaching or potential as an educator, ideally based on direct observation. Letters must be signed, appear on institutional letterhead, and be addressed to the Teaching Assistant Professor Search Committee. Finalists will be invited to campus to give a 50-minute talk, interviews and meals with faculty and staff, and a student lunch.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.
Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
