Reporting to the Associate Director, Sponsored Programs Post-Award, the Senior Managing Post Award Officer (SMPAO) is responsible for overseeing the financial and reporting aspects of a portfolio. This position operates with a high level of autonomy and is expected to work independently in the completion of all portfolio duties, including but not limited to the review and approval of cost transfers, financial reporting, and award closeout activities.

The SMPAO provides excellent customer service to faculty, departmental administrators, peers, and sponsors; serves as a backup to the Associate Director when needed; and reinforces University compliance and sponsor requirements. This role requires the ability to independently resolve complex issues using sound logic, proven methodologies, and effective solutions. The SMPAO maintains an advanced working knowledge of federal and non-federal regulations as well as institutional policies, effectively communicating them to colleagues and stakeholders.

The SMPAO will demonstrate high emotional intelligence, collaborate effectively with colleagues and peers, exercise sound judgment regarding escalation, and promote a professional, diplomatic environment always. Additionally, the SMPAO maintains a strong partnership with Pre-Award colleagues to ensure seamless lifecycle management for the research community and actively supports broader departmental initiatives. If not currently certified, the SMPAO is strongly encouraged to sit for the Certified Financial Research Administrator (CFRA) exam.

Required Skills
  • At least 5 years of related work experience in research administration or post-award financial management.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; substantial, direct post-award experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Technical & Data Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, advanced formulas, data modeling, financial reconciliation).
  • Collaboration & Productivity Tools: Hands-on experience utilizing Microsoft 365 enterprise tools, including SharePoint, Power Automate, and Copilot / AI productivity tools to streamline administrative operations
