Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent and/or Supervisor Carpenter, work with other shop Senior Superintendents, Supervisors, Project Managers and clients regarding various project requirements and oversee cabinet shop. Provide estimates to clients and schedules for cabinet and case work projects. Provide daily updates as to the status of the projects to the Senior Superintendent, Carpentry and/or Supervisor of Carpentry. Organize, assign, or modify daily work assignments of journey-level Carpenters / Cabinet Makers, Lead Facility Mechanics, Facility Mechanics, Facilities Workers, or Apprentice Carpenters in the shop. Assignments are given in terms of specific projects and/or expertise or specialty skills of Carpenters. Assist journey persons. Assign additional staff. Communicate concerns of client to Senior Superintendent or Supervisor. Continuously monitor all project job sites and inspect work completed for accuracy, timeliness, and quality of workmanship. Maintain in-shop supply inventory and monitor inventory levels to assure that materials and equipment used on a daily basis are available to satisfactorily complete a job function or when subordinate requests assistance. Assure that good safety practices are observed on the job site and tools and equipment are in safe working order.


Salary & Compensation

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of a variety of materials, equipment, methods and tools of the Carpenter's trade, specifically cabinet-making, including achievement of journey-level skills. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of Class A construction and codes, fire codes, construction procedures and ADA requirements (ADA/Fire hardware and installation). (Required)
  • Working knowledge of standard safety practices and equipment used related to the Carpenter's trade. (Required)
  • Skill in: reading plan specifications and/or blueprints; basic mathematics to calculate layouts and offsets and provide accurate cost calculations and estimates; estimating material and labor requirements related to the trade. (Required)
  • Writing skills sufficient to complete forms, make job status reports, provide job site evaluations/estimates, and write emails to clients that are written in a grammatically correct manner and are easy to read. (Required)
  • Ability to: schedule, layout, coordinate, direct and inspect the work of highly skilled carpenter journeypersons; prioritize assignments in order to complete work in a timely manner. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, clients, managers and the campus community. (Required)
  • Skill in working independently and following through on all assignments (Required)
  • Excellent oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear and concise information. (Required)
  • Familiarity with OSHPD Regulations. (Required)
  • Must be able to work overtime when needed. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of U.L. Fire Stopping. (Preferred)

  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Other Type of Degree Satisfactory completion of a Certified Carpentry Apprenticeship Program or equivalent education and experience. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
  • Certified in an Approved Contractor/Supervisor/Competent person Asbestos Removal training program and possession of Class I-IV asbestos work qualification from Cal-Osha. (Preferred)

  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
