Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Sr. Educational Facility Planner (Manager) and/or Assistant Director(s), supervise and coordinate the work of the Carpentry Shop which includes Lead Carpenters, Carpenters, Facilities Mechanics, and Facilities Workers. In concert with Manager, responsible for full supervision, hiring, discipline, evaluation and termination of all shop employees who design, build, install, alter and/or repair cabinetry, rough carpentry and finish carpentry and related equipment and infrastructure carpentry. Review and coordinate daily schedules; review work and interface with client. Conduct job site assessment, prepare estimates; resolve project problems and ensure each job is closed and charged properly.

Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of all aspects of the Carpentry trade and related codes sufficient to direct work, evaluate progress and ensure that craft work assignments meet stated standards. Recent demonstrated experience and solid working knowledge of layout, scheduling, coordinating, and directing the work of highly skilled carpenter journeypersons. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of construction trade practices and safety requirements sufficient to oversee all phases of repair and renovation work, prepare multi-craft estimates, work scopes, budgets and schedules; address project related delays or disruptions and bring to closure within stated timeframes and guidelines. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: various types of materials and tools/equipment of the carpentry trade; all phases of repair, construction and alteration work performed by skilled trades sufficient to coordinate project completion. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: current industry accepted methods and procedures for inspecting and/or troubleshoot building systems for signs of damage, deterioration, or need for adjustment; Federal ADA laws regarding access to restrooms etc. as it relates to the Carpentry Trade. (Required)
  • Ability to: perform basic arithmetic in order to calculate layout and offsets with accuracy; read work project specifications, blue prints, and technical trade related manuals. Skill in: mathematical calculations sufficient to prepare budgets, estimates, reports and projects to monitor project costs; writing concise, logical and grammatically correct correspondence and analytical reports. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of human resources management sufficient to conduct performance evaluations, counseling, feedback sessions, and implementation of progressive corrective action in a unionized work environment. (Required)
  • Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; prioritize assignments, organize work assignments of crew, and complete projects in a timely manner; use personal computer and standard office software such as Word, Excel etc. and the ability to program panels with manufacturer's supplied software. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements as it relates to the carpentry trade and the ability to recognize discrepancies of the ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job and report to manager; micro-computers and Microsoft Office and software such as Word, Excel or Access. (Required)
  • Ability to: work overtime, weekends, and alternate shifts as needed; work under fluctuating workload conditions with frequent interruptions, distractions and emergencies. (Required)
  • Ability to communicate effectively on a one-to-one basis or in group setting to obtain information; explain policies, procedures, or persuade others to accept or adopt a specific opinion, action, etc. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: Joint Commission and OSHPD regulations and guidelines; computerized facilities maintenance software (i.e. Maximo); University policies and procedures related to construction (contracts, bids, purchasing etc.). (Preferred)

  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Other Type of Degree Satisfactory completion of a certified apprenticeship or equivalent education and experience. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
