Department Information
The Technical Operations & User Experience (TechOps & UX) department within Campus Services is responsible for delivering seamless, student-centered experiences through innovative technology, integrated support services, and operational excellence. Our teams support critical campus services by connecting people, processes, and technology to improve accessibility, reliability, and user experience across the Institute. Through customer service, technology operations, strategic planning, financial stewardship, credentialing, access control, and human-centered design, we work collaboratively to ensure Campus Services remains responsive, efficient, and focused on the needs of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our mission is to provide seamless, student-first support through connected systems, accessible services, and a commitment to innovation. As a member of TechOps & UX, the Associate Director of Access Control provides operational leadership for Georgia Tech's access control services, overseeing the daily management of locksmiths and access control technicians responsible for securing campus facilities. This position leads physical access control lifecycle management, drives standardization of processes and technologies, supports campus-wide access control projects and installations, and ensures the delivery of reliable 24/7/365 support services that protect people, facilities, and institutional assets. The role partners closely with campus stakeholders to advance modernization initiatives, improve operational efficiency, and maintain a secure, scalable access control environment.

Job Summary

Manages assigned staff on multiple locations who are responsible for performing all general, preventative, and supportive maintenance tasks of door access systems and products. Responsibilities include oversite of new installations, troubleshooting, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance of access control hardware. Responsible for the hiring, training, and performance management of assigned team. Additionally, offers general IT support for user sites related to access control and proprietary software. Provides emergency and corrective and/or preventative maintenance as needed.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Oversees and manages customer requests and work orders through the ticketing software, including ensuring tasks are assigned to appropriate staff, promptly completed, and periodically reviewed for accuracy and proper support.

Job Duty 2 -
Initiates processes, coordinates logistics, and manages all aspects of door hardware, and hard keys for all university locations. Manages all hardware purchases and inventory of the door access hardware, equipment, and supplies.

Job Duty 3 -
Provides support in and recommendations in preparing bid documents, prepares written and electronic documentation. Assists with supervising contractors and work performance.

Job Duty 4 -
Collaborates with department leaders in the creation of and maintenance of door access policies, processes, and standards.

Job Duty 5 -
Ensures all work is performed within established guidelines, processes, procedures, and appropriate preventative maintenance completed in accordance with governing and university regulations.

Job Duty 6 -
Works with campus partners to ensure all new construction projects and renovations meet established standards and regulations including sections 8 and 28, fire doors and hardware, and ADA compliance hardware standards.

Job Duty 7 -
Responds to service calls outside of standard business hours to address safety risks and urgent security concerns. Collaborates with the division customer service team to ensure excellent communication and customer service is provided to students, faculty, staff, and other university affiliates.

Job Duty 8 -
Capable of complex lock installations and maintenance work, including detection and correction of mechanical failures.

Job Duty 9 -
Capable of maintaining ADA operators and ADA door hardware to maintain code compliance.

Job Duty 10 -
Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Required Experience
Seven (7) years of progressive experience in access control including managerial or supervisory experience. Previous experience in higher education preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES
- Able to diagnose malfunctions and defects in equipment and tools and determine the appropriate corrective measures
- Able to understand and comply with building codes, electrical codes, fire codes, plumbing codes, and other technical standards and specifications
- Keeps up to date with industry improvements, technology advancements, and best practices to ensure best-in-class university ID card program solutions
- Able to learn new software and technology systems
- Able to work autonomously and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one-time meeting assigned deadlines

KNOWLEDGE
- Working knowledge of access control software (preferably in higher education)
- Knowledgeable and skilled in the installation and maintenance of remote electronic access control devices, door locking hardware, and related networking equipment
- Working knowledge of mechanical and electronic key system hardware
- Knowledge of methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials, used in a variety of locksmith trade
- Knowledge of low voltage devices for installations, connection, repair, and replacement.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the use of tools and equipment

SKILLS
- Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management, and presentation skills
- Experience with direct oversite of field technicians
- Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite, Lenel S2, Best or similar key systems
- Direct technical and/or administrative support of one or more electronic access control systems, particular experience with Lenel S2 System
- Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
- Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette
