Description:

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for a tenure-line position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning Fall 2027.  The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is on the academic semester system, and the default teaching load is two courses per semester, totaling four per year.  Research and teaching expectations are high.  Tenure-line faculty in the department are highly research-active.  Teaching expectations include undergraduate courses at all levels, graduate teaching in area(s) of specialization and competence, and mentoring of student research at all levels, including directing theses and serving on thesis committees.  Faculty are also responsible for service to the department, university, and profession, of a kind and degree appropriate to rank.  Interest in exploring the possibility of developing a new logic lab on campus would be desirable.  UTK is a land-grant university and values publicly-engaged research, teaching, and service, and considers evidence of commitment to public engagement in the records of applicants.


Qualifications:

PhD in Philosophy must be completed by the position start date, 8/1/2027.  Some preference will be given to candidates at the advanced Assistant or early Associate level.  Candidates for appointment at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate potential to develop a sustained record of excellence in teaching and research.  Candidates for appointment at the Associate Professor level must demonstrate a sustained record of excellence in teaching and research, as well as a record of significant service.

Area of Specialization: Philosophy of Language or Logic

Area of Competency: Open but ability to teach PHIL 235 (Formal Logic) is required.  Highly desirable would be one or more of (i) ability to teach PHIL 435 (Intermediate Formal Logic, required for all Ph.D. students); (ii) ability to contribute to some interdisciplinary area (e.g. linguistics, neuroscience, AI, game development); (iii) ability to contribute to the department's degree concentrations in Legal and Political Philosophy or Philosophy of Science and Medicine.
