Essential Job Duties:

Why choose the NC State University Libraries as a first professional librarian position?
The Libraries Fellows Program provides a launching pad for a career in academic librarianship. Fellows will experience the rewards of working in a leading research library and with a large user community reflecting a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, including outstanding faculty and students in nationally ranked academic programs. They will gain experience in a highly collaborative work environment with access to key decision makers throughout the organization. They will also develop expertise in and contribute meaningfully to a variety of essential functional areas in academic librarianship. In addition to a competitive salary, Fellows receive a generous professional development stipend.
The success of the Program is illustrated by the success of the Fellows themselves. Since its inception in 1999, 95 Fellows have completed the Program. Ninety-five percent of Fellows have been offered academic positions or have entered doctoral programs upon completion of the program. Many former Fellows have been recognized more widely in the field, including seven named as Library Journal Movers and Shakers, adding to the reputation of the Program as a training ground for library leaders.
What do Libraries Fellows work on?
The NC State University Libraries is well known for its digital research and experiential learning initiatives, technological advances such as immersive visualization, support for open scholarship and student affordability, interdisciplinary teaching and learning, public engagement with research, and commitment to championing a culture of belonging and well-being in everything we do—all of which help to actively shape the future of librarianship. The Libraries is also defined by a staff who deeply consider how their approach to their daily work reflects and advances the Libraries’ Strategic Plan, creating an environment and community that is welcoming for both patrons and colleagues alike. We seek out candidates with interests and aptitudes in these areas, and Fellows assignments reflect these areas of focus. Fellows perform as entry-level librarians with their time during the first 18 months divided between two Libraries departments—allowing the Fellows to develop their interests and expertise in two functional areas of academic librarianship. The second 18 months will typically focus on areas that have emerged over the course of the Fellowship, taking into consideration both the Libraries’ operational needs and the professional interests and goals of the Fellow.
The Libraries recognizes that self-determination is an important consideration in a Fellowship experience like this. During the interview process, candidates learn about the Libraries’ departments and initiatives. They are given the opportunity to indicate their preferences for their dual departmental assignments, and those preferences are considered in determining the placements of successful candidates.

Organization

NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
