Stanford University is seeking an experienced Financial Manager 1 to serve as the senior financial and operational partner for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' Child and Sleep clinical portfolios. This position manages finance staff and leads complex divisional work involving budgeting and forecasting, faculty and staff compensation, provider productivity and clinical effort, hospital funds flow, protected time, incentive support, clinical program planning, trainee and GME expenses, executive reporting and cross-entity financial operations.

The Clinical Finance Manager works closely with Division Chiefs, faculty leaders, Department administration and finance partners across Stanford Medicine. The position is responsible for translating complex financial, productivity, staffing and operational information into clear recommendations; identifying and resolving issues that cross organizational boundaries; and ensuring that leadership decisions are implemented through accurate budgets, forecasts, dashboards, financial transactions and operating procedures.

The successful candidate will bring strong people-management experience, advanced financial and analytical skills, sound judgment and the ability to operate effectively in a complex academic medical environment. This role requires more than report preparation. The Financial Manager must understand the operational meaning of the data, challenge inconsistencies, quantify risk, recommend solutions and communicate effectively with senior clinical and administrative leaders.

Duties include:

• Manage and develop finance staff supporting the Child and Sleep clinical portfolios, including assignment of work, technical review, coaching, performance management, cross-training and succession coverage.

• Lead annual budgeting, rolling forecasting and ongoing financial management for assigned divisions, programs and clinical activities.

• Advise leadership on financial performance, clinical staffing, faculty deployment, provider productivity, protected time, compensation-related matters, hospital support and program sustainability.

• Direct provider and divisional reporting involving wRVUs, clinical FTE, patient volume, revenue, labor, operating expense, funds flow and margin.

• Resolve complex financial and operational issues involving the Department, School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, GME and external partners.

• Establish and maintain controls for high-risk or judgment-intensive processes, including cross-entity funding, provider productivity adjustments, faculty effort, trainee expenses and financial transactions.

• Lead financial planning for new or changing clinical programs, including staffing, volume, productivity, revenue, reimbursement, startup funding and post-launch monitoring.

• Improve dashboards, reporting methods, account structures and recurring workflows through standardization, documentation, appropriate automation and clear ownership.

• Represent the Department in internal and external financial discussions and communicate decision-ready recommendations to senior leadership.

Responsibilities

Core Duties:

  • Manage the work of other employees, make hiring decisions,provide coaching and mentoring, manage performance, contribute tosuccession planning within area of responsibility.

  • Establish overall objectives or direction for a unit, project, oroperational area. Plan, direct, and monitor all budgets for areas ofresponsibility, and manage business operation and administration of afunctional unit or area; may lead a team in providing post awardsponsored research administration and services.

  • Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multipleareas, apply ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis andresolution.

  • Oversee report preparation and analysis requiring theconsolidation of multiple, complex financial and statistical datapoints.

  • Communicate financial policies and procedures; ensure accuracy,completeness, and timeliness for management financial processes andreports.

  • Collaborate with other colleagues on cross functional projects;contribute to solutions that may affect policy changes or thedevelopment of new controls or processes.

  • Participate in critical analysis of existing systems, policies,and procedures; recommend and implement approved solutions.

  • Contribute to projects in work area or unit; make decisionsdetermining approach to managing and completing processes.

  • Represent the unit within the functional unit or school and toexternal constituencies.

Minimum Education andExperience

Bachelor’s degree and six years relevant experience or combination ofeducation and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems.

  • Solid understanding of financial principles.

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information tointernal and external audiences, and all levels of management.

  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financialinformation.

  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experiencemanaging people, delegating workload and providing direction/correctionsas necessary.

  • Knowledge of property management requirements related to Stanfordor non-Stanford title of equipment and fabrications.

  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume ofwork, some of which is cyclical.

  • If managing sponsored projects, ability to manage post and preaward administration for sponsored projects within his/her unit.Knowledge and fluency of governmental regulations and completion ofCardinal Curriculum level I and II.

  • Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, costanalyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.

  • Demonstrated experience working successfully with PIs, theiradministrative staff, and the office of sponsored research and externalsponsors.

  • Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality andcompliant work.

  • Ability to interpret complex research and fiscal policies,assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act like amentor and resource to others.
