Duties:SUMMARY
Under direction, the Maintenance Plumber is responsible for the inspection, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of the College’s plumbing systems and related equipment. This position ensures campus plumbing systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable building, plumbing, and health codes. The Maintenance Plumber supports the College’s mission by maintaining safe, reliable, and functional plumbing systems that provide a comfortable learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Essential Duties. Other duties may be assigned.
- Receive work assignments, work orders, and preventive maintenance schedules from the Maintenance Supervisor or Lead Maintenance Mechanic.
- Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and install commercial plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty piping systems.
- Install, repair, and replace plumbing fixtures, faucets, flush valves, sinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains, water heaters, pumps, backflow prevention devices, valves, piping, and related equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems and equipment to maximize reliability and service life.
- Troubleshoot and repair domestic water distribution systems, sanitary waste systems, storm drainage systems, natural gas piping, sump pumps, sewage ejectors, and related mechanical equipment.
- Inspect, test, repair, and maintain backflow prevention assemblies and cross-connection control devices in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Perform pipe installation, fabrication, threading, soldering, brazing, grooving, fusion welding (where applicable), and other plumbing installation methods using approved materials.
- Read and interpret blueprints, plumbing drawings, specifications, technical manuals, and applicable building and plumbing codes.
- Perform operational testing and inspections following repairs or installations to verify proper system performance.
- Assist in maintaining domestic hot water systems, water softening equipment, pumps, and related plumbing infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, equipment documentation, and preventive maintenance records using the College’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Coordinate plumbing-related work with contractors, vendors, and other Facilities personnel as needed.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, state and local plumbing codes, health regulations, and College safety policies.
- Participate in the department’s on-call rotation and respond to plumbing emergencies outside normal working hours.
- Maintain assigned tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
- Perform other departmental duties as assigned. May provide technical guidance and training to maintenance personnel assigned to assist with plumbing-related projects.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Plumbing Technology, Construction Technology, Building Trades, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of technical education, industry certifications, and documented training required.
- Successful completion of a recognized plumbing apprenticeship program.
- Minimum of five (5) years of current journey-level commercial plumbing experience performing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial plumbing systems.
- Experience working in institutional, healthcare, educational, or commercial facilities is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
Required:
- Valid Illinois Plumber’s License from IDPH (or ability to obtain reciprocal licensing if applicable).
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to qualify as insurable under the College’s insurance carrier.
- Preferred:
- Illinois Cross Connection Control Device Inspector Certification.
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification.
- Gas certification or other plumbing-related industry certifications.
- Confined space, lift equipment, or OSHA safety training.
Qualifications:
In addition to the above requirements, the following are sought:
- Thorough knowledge of commercial plumbing systems, domestic water distribution, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas piping, pumps, water heaters, and plumbing fixtures.
- Knowledge of Illinois Plumbing Code, applicable building codes, and industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plumbing drawings, specifications, and technical manuals.
- Proficiency using plumbing diagnostic equipment, testing instruments, power tools, and specialized plumbing equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, contractors, vendors, and other College personnel.
- Commitment to workplace safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.

WORK ENVIRONMENTThe on site work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to mechanical equipment, plumbing systems, confined spaces, sewage, chemicals, pressurized piping, natural gas systems, noise, dust, moisture, and other conditions commonly associated with commercial plumbing maintenance. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required.Participation in an on-call rotation and occasional evening or weekend work is required to respond to emergencies and support campus operations.Position Status:
