The Opportunity

The Department of Nursing in the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences (MCNHS) at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor beginning September 1, 2027.

This position offers the opportunity to join a diverse community of scholars whose research is advances health equity across local and global settings. We seek an accomplished investigator with an established, externally funded program of research who will sustain and extend that work at UMass Boston, provide scholarly leadership within the Department, and mentor doctoral students and early-career faculty. The successful candidate will benefit from an established culture of collaboration and strong research infrastructure.

Our Scholarship

Nursing scholarship at UMass Boston is grounded in health equity. Our faculty conduct research where health is shaped and delivered, collaborating with communities to address health challenges locally and globally. We welcome applicants whose scholarship aligns with or expands our strengths in areas such as, aging and gerontology, maternal and child health, community-engaged research, and clinically focused science, including cardiovascular health, diabetes, and oncology.

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will:

  • Sustain and expand an externally funded program of research as principal investigator,
  • Teach and mentor student, including chairing and serving on dissertation committees
  • Mentor early-career faculty in research development, grant proposal preparation, and scholarly productivity
  • Provide leadership and service to the Department, College, University, and profession
  • Build and sustain research collaborations across the University and with our community partners
  • What You Will Bring

    Required

  • An earned research doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in nursing or a related field
  • Eligibility for RN licensure in Massachusetts
  • A record of research, teaching, and service that merits appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure at the University of Massachusetts Boston
  • Current extramural funding as principal investigator that can be transferred to or sustained at UMass Boston, or a clearly articulated plan to secure such funding upon arrival
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and/or early-career faculty
  • Teaching experience in higher education
  • Appointment at the rank of Professor additionally requires a national or international reputation in the candidate’s area of science and a sustained history of continuous, competitive extramural funding as principal investigator. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s record and determined through the University’s review process.

    Preferred

  • An active award that is transferable to UMass Boston
  • Experience leading research teams, centers, cores, or training grants
  • A record of mentoring colleagues in grant proposal and manuscript development
  • Doctoral-level teaching and leadership of dissertation or capstone committees
  • What We Offer

    The Manning College and its Office of Research provide internal and external mentoring for faculty, including structured support for grant proposal and manuscript preparation, alongside a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research opportunities. Faculty appointed at senior rank receive a competitive start-up package, and the College’s pre- and post-award research administration team supports the transfer and ongoing management of existing extramural awards.

    Our faculty collaborate with major academic and medical institutions in and around Boston, including the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, UMass Chan Medical School, Boston Children’s Hospital, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as well as with community, public, and private health care agencies across the region. The National Cancer Institute funds the University of Massachusetts Boston–Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center partnership; this longstanding collaboration has enabled faculty at both institutions to strengthen and extend partnerships for research on health disparities, PhD training, and community outreach.

    Our Programs

    The BS, MS, and DNP nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The MS and DNP programs prepare Family Nurse Practitioners and Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioners. The PhD program focuses on health equity, broadly defined.

    UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $118,500 and $190,000 for this position.

    The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
