JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Adjunct Instructor of Literacy is responsible for providing high-quality instruction to undergraduate and/or graduate students enrolled in literacy courses. The instructor will prepare future educators to implement evidence-based instructional practices aligned with the Science of Reading and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve reading and literacy outcomes for diverse learners.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and deliver course content in alignment with the School of Education (SOE) curriculum, ensuring academic rigor, relevance, and alignment with program expectations.Utilize University-approved systems for course facilitation, recordkeeping, assessment, and communication. Systems may include, but are not limited to, Canvas Learning Management System, Banner, EAB Navigate, Microsoft Teams, Watermark, and Microsoft Education.Facilitate designated field experience hours for students and serve as a liaison between selected local school campuses, approved school personnel, and students to ensure meaningful and relevant instructional experiences.Adhere to the departmental assessment blueprint when administering midterm formative assessments and final summative assessments.Maintain accurate course, student, assessment, and field experience records in accordance with departmental and University requirements.Provide students with timely feedback, guidance, and support related to course assignments, assessments, and field experiences.Maintain appropriate communication with students, departmental leadership, and partnering school personnel regarding course and field experience requirements.Adhere to all departmental and University reporting requirements and deadlines as established by the academic calendar.Perform other related instructional duties as assigned in support of the School of Education and its academic programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Literacy, Reading Education, English Language Arts, Education, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in education, literacy instruction, English Language Arts, or a related area.
- Current or previously held certification in English Language Arts or a closely related teaching field.
- Must meet Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements for teaching courses within the assigned academic discipline.
- Demonstrated knowledge of literacy instruction, evidence-based instructional practices, and the Science of Reading.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively teach and support diverse learners in an academic or educational setting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in Literacy, Reading Education, English Language Arts, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.

The University expanded to other cities in the state, establishing Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO), Southern University, Shreveport (SUSLA), the Southern University Law Center, and the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SUAREC).
