Job description/Research Training and Responsibilities: A full-time postdoctoral position is available to study immuno-engineering and develop novel, biomaterial-based immunotherapeutics is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jamal Lewis (https://www.ufllewislab.com/) . This position is for an initial one-year appointment and has the potential to be renewed for an additional year based on performance and funding availability. We seek an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to advance a novel platform of immune‑modulatory biomaterial particles designed to attenuate aberrant immune responses in rheumatoid arthritis. The candidate will work beside materials scientists, chemists, and immunologists on particle synthesis, in‑vitro and in‑vivo validation, and translational pathway design. For this highly collaborative position, the successful applicant will be expected to work closely with other faculty in the Biomedical Engineering department, and researchers at UF College of Medicine and the UF College of Pharmacy.

 The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in immunology, immunology‑related life sciences, or a closely allied field, has hands‑on experience in autoimmune disease models or adaptive immune modulation, and is comfortable integrating materials science with biologic assays. Qualified applicants must have experience working successfully in a team setting, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong publication record. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated expertise using various biomedical imaging modalities, small animal procedures, and those who have a strong track record as graduate students as evidenced by their published work.

 Attributes of UF and Gainesville: The BME Department is housed in a state-of-the art building that is located in the medical school and steps from engineering. The University of Florida is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus. UF is a highly collaborative environment that provides researchers with many opportunities for learning (e.g., top seminar programs, excellent core research facilities) and research collaborations. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality.

 UF BME and the IMBL: The J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering is one of only a few departments in the nation to be co-localized with a top-ranked medical school, veterinary school and dental school. The department is housed in a state-of-the-art building that is co-located with the medical school and steps from engineering. The IMBL is housed in the brand new, Wertheim Engineering Building (opened in 2020), just a few steps away from the Reitz Union (the center of campus). Biomedical Engineering at UF partners with many local research centers and institutes including the McKnight Brain Institute, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.

Expected Salary:

$60,000.00
