POSITION SUMMARY:
Collaboratively coordinate and deliver university accessibility services and supports for students with disabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish and supervise delivery and database documentation of essential services to students with disabilities, including reasonable accommodations to support equal opportunity in URI academic and co-curricular programs and services.
Assess, verify and facilitate student requests for services via remote and in person meetings.
Conduct learning support services for students with mental health disabilities, learning disabilities, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, autism spectrum disorders and other documented conditions.
Hire, train, and supervise student employees as needed.
Advise individual students and student groups concerning disability, diversity, civil rights, services, and self-advocacy.
Assist and advise the Assistant Dean/Director in guiding University departments regarding accessibility options in courses, programs, and services.
Assist and advise University departments in providing services to students with disabilities.
Appropriately refer faculty and staff regarding disability-related options.
Provide information regarding postsecondary transition for local transition collaboratives, at transition forums and events. Provide guidance to prospective transitioning students and their families.
Participate in Disability, Access, and Inclusion and Dean of Students Office Social Justice and Inclusion initiatives.
In collaboration with Housing and Residential Life, manage communication with students seeking accommodations within the housing environment to facilitate the delivery of consistent and accurate information.
Liaise with and advise IT Teaching and Learning Services to ensure online accessibility of Brightspace or other online course system, develop training modules and assessment strategies for faculty, and support students in their ability to access online courses.
Oversee the Annual Disability, Access, and Inclusion response for URI Commencement, i.e. develop and maintain an accommodation registration system for Commencement visitors, coordinate staffing and other supports to ensure accessible commencement sites for the weekend of events, coordinate distribution of adaptive equipment as necessary.
Collaborate with Transportation & Parking Services to deliver mobility support systems such as disability transportation and parking systems; including liaison with Enrollment Services to ensure accessibility of classrooms as needed.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advise Disability, Access, and Inclusion personnel in current best practices.
Represent the office on committees and at University events.
Perform additional duties as required.

Nearly 23,000 students applied for fewer than 3,300 openings in the 2017 freshman class, which boasts an average grade point average of 3.54. The 17 to 1 student/faculty ratio allows for personal attention and rewarding teaching experiences. Approximately 87 percent of faculty hold terminal degrees. In 2018 URI produced two Fulbright Scholars, five Boren Scholars, a Truman Scholar, and was named a one of the country’s top Gilman scholar-producing schools. Four campuses, one community
URI’s main campus is located on 1,248 acres in rural Kingston, where the campus core — including a quadrangle surrounded by handsome granite buildings — is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Six miles from Rhode Island’s beaches, this campus is conveniently situated along the Boston to New York corridor. The University’s renowned Graduate School of Oceanography is located at the 165-acre Narragansett Bay Campus. The Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies brings higher education to downtown Providence. Nearby, the 133,000-square-foot Rhode Island Nursing Education Center includes unparalleled simulation labs. The W. Alton Jones Campus — 2,300 acres of forests, lakes, and farmland in West Greenwich — provides a secluded setting for academic research, environmental education, business meetings and special events.
Investing in the future
Since 2007, the University has invested $607 million in campus capital projects, including: a $150 million engineering complex, due to open in 2019; Brookside, another new apartment-style residence hall, 2019; a Welcome Center, 2018; the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center, 2017; Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences, 2016; and Avedisian Hall, home to the College of Pharmacy, 2012.

The University is home to several centers of expertise that tackle some of society’s most vexing challenges. The George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience brings multi-disciplinary research to bear on devastating brain diseases, such as ALS and Alzheimer’s.
