Position Description :

The Department of Anthropology at Texas State University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor of Instruction, beginning January 1, 2027. The primary responsibility and workload of an instructional faculty member is to provide effective teaching, learning, and instruction. The ideal candidate has experience teaching Anthropology 1312 (Cultural Anthropology), Anthropology 3336/5336 (Locally Engaged Research/Community Research), Anthropology 3325 (Medical Anthropology), and Anthropology 5361 (Qualitative Methods). We seek a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on veterans, Latinas in the military, and oral histories of death practices, rituals, and beliefs of the Teenek community in Mexico to incorporate those areas of expertise into courses taught.

The Department of Anthropology has 24 full-time faculty working in archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The department includes two major centers, the Center for Archaeological Studies and the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State and the Innovative Anthropologies Laboratory that support sustained and innovative research by faculty and students. Our cultural and linguistic faculty work across a range of interconnected research areas—including the study of language and socio-cultural processes, history of anthropology, social movements, justice, and health and the study of innovation, design, and technology. Cross-cutting these areas, our faculty contribute to research that focuses on applied, public, and actionable anthropologies.The department offers baccalaureate degrees in anthropology, an M.A. in anthropology, and a Ph.D. in applied anthropology. Required Qualifications:

• PhD in anthropology awarded by the time of hire.
• Experience teaching introductory cultural anthropology, locally engaged and community research, medical anthropology, and qualitative methods.
• Experience teaching both online and in-person classes.
• Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate classes.
• Demonstrated experience contributing to department service through committee membership, course or program coordination, and other activities aligned with instructional activities and outcomes.
• Research focused on veterans, Latinas in the military, and oral histories of death practices, rituals, and beliefs of the Teenek community in Mexico.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students through grants that enhance student learning opportunities and serving on thesis committees.
• A master’s degree or other qualification in international studies.
