Why ISE at NC State?

In ISE, you will be part of a department where innovative research happens both within and across disciplines. The Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering includes more than 25 faculty, 10 core staff, 350 undergraduate students, and 250 graduate students, including approximately 75 Ph.D. students. Our research spans advanced and biomedical manufacturing; health systems; human systems; supply chain and logistics; and systems analytics and optimization, along with interdisciplinary collaborations across the university and beyond. Our faculty are internationally recognized in their fields, with Fellows of IISE, INFORMS, SME, and other professional societies.

You will join a collaborative and collegial community where faculty work across traditional disciplinary boundaries and engage with researchers, medical schools, universities, industry, and government partners. The department leads three centers and multiple interdisciplinary graduate programs, creating opportunities to pursue research and educational collaborations well beyond ISE. In addition to degrees in ISE, the department leads the professional Master’s in Engineering Management program and collaborates on the graduate Operations Research program.The department houses two state-funded centers that are public-private partnerships: the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina, the only center of its kind at a U.S. public research institution, and the Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics, one of the most advanced manufacturing and 3D printing laboratories in the country. The newly established Bezos Center for Alternative Proteins is also led by an ISE faculty member. These centers provide additional opportunities to collaborate with industry and pursue research with real-world impact.

You will have access to world-class laboratory and research facilities supporting computing, manufacturing, human factors, and ergonomics research. These resources are complemented by Fitts-Woolard Hall, our state-of-the-art home on NC State’s Centennial Campus, located near the award-winning Hunt Library and numerous industry and government facilities. Centennial Campus provides a unique environment for university-industry collaboration and interdisciplinary research.At NC State ISE, our students “Think and Do” through active learning and real-world problems across the ISE discipline. Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at NC State University invites applications for open-rank, tenure-track faculty positions at all career stages. The department welcomes candidates whose research and teaching interests align with the broad field of Industrial and Systems Engineering, with particular interest in artificial intelligence and/or quantum computing for optimization; logistics and supply chain management; data science and analytics; and emerging areas of national and international importance. Appointments may be considered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level based on qualifications and career stage.
In this role, you will shape the future of Industrial and Systems Engineering through research, teaching, and collaboration. You will have the opportunity to establish a distinctive research agenda, pursue meaningful partnerships across disciplines, and translate your expertise into advances that address complex engineering challenges. Through your teaching and mentorship, you will help prepare the next generation of engineers, researchers, and leaders while contributing your perspective and expertise to the continued growth and excellence of ISE and NC State.

Key Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

  • Build and sustain an independent, externally funded research program that advances Industrial and Systems Engineering and contributes to emerging areas of national and international importance.
  • Conduct and disseminate high-impact research through scholarly publications, presentations, and other contributions to the field.
  • Develop interdisciplinary collaborations within NC State and with external academic, industry, government, and research partners to address complex engineering challenges.
  • Teach and develop courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, creating engaging learning experiences that prepare students for the evolving field of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
  • Mentor and advise graduate students and support their academic, research, and professional development.
  • Contribute to the department, college, and university community through service, leadership, and activities that advance the mission and vision of NC State.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or a related area along with appropriate experience by their start date:

  • Rank of Assistant Professor – Demonstrated ability and the potential for directing activities in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility; ability and willingness to participate in department, college, and university affairs; a doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering or closely-related discipline.
  • Rank of Associate Professor – Recognized ability and potential for distinction, and demonstrated ability to direct activities, in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility; demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in department, college, and university affairs; a doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering or closely-related discipline.
