Department Overview:

The Department of Social Work is entering an exciting period of growth and innovation. In addition to expanding its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, the Department is actively developing a PhD program in Social Work, creating new opportunities for faculty leadership in doctoral education, research mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the advancement of the social work profession. The development of the PhD program reflects both the Department's growth and Binghamton University's broader commitment to expanding high-impact graduate and doctoral education within its R1 research environment.

The Department is part of College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA), an interdisciplinary college focused on preparing students for careers and leadership in public and community service. CCPA brings together Social Work, Human Development, Public Administration and Policy, Higher Education and Student Affairs, and Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership, alongside the interdisciplinary Community Research and Action PhD program. The College emphasizes social justice, interdisciplinary collaboration, applied scholarship, and meaningful engagement with local, regional, national, and global communities. Located in downtown Binghamton, CCPA is closely connected to a broad network of community agencies, schools, health and human service organizations, government entities, and nonprofit partners.

The Department offers a growing BSW program, a long-standing in-person MSW program, and an exclusively online MSW program, including full-time, part-time, and advanced standing pathways. The Department's programs are grounded in social justice, multisystem practice, community engagement, and a commitment to preparing social workers to address complex social problems across individuals, families, organizations, and communities.

Both the Department and CCPA value applied, community-engaged scholarship that generates knowledge while contributing to meaningful improvements in the lives of individuals, families, organizations, and communities. Faculty collaborate extensively with colleagues across the University as well as with regional agencies, health and human service organizations, schools, nonprofit organizations, and government partners. Faculty members contribute to the intellectual and professional life of the Department through teaching, research, advising and mentoring, service, community engagement, and participation in program development and accreditation activities.

Job Description:

Binghamton University is seeking faculty members at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to join its Department of Social Work within the College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA). We seek scholar-educators whose teaching, research, and community engagement contribute to the Department's mission and strengthen our growing academic portfolio. We value inclusive, student-centered, competency-based pedagogy and seek faculty who can engage students across multiple learning modalities. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work advances evidence-informed and ethically grounded social work practice and addresses pressing challenges in areas such as:

• behavioral health
• child and family well-being
• child welfare
• health and mental health
• substance use
• aging
• social policy
• community development
• and other areas of contemporary social work practice and research

Key Responsibilities:

• Teach approximately two courses per semester across the Department's BSW, in-person MSW, and exclusively online MSW programs.
• Contribute to the continued development of the Department's BSW, MSW, and emerging doctoral programs, as well as to interdisciplinary initiatives across CCPA and Binghamton University.
• Mentor students in research and scholarship as the doctoral program develops
• Establish and sustain an active program of scholarship with a strong potential for external funding, such as:
  • federal agencies such as NIH, HRSA, ACF, and DoD
  • foundations
  • other external sponsors

Requirements:

Requirements:

• Doctoral degree conferred by August 1, 2027
• Experience teaching online asynchronous, and/or in person (traditional) environments
• Scholarly research and teaching that incorporates inclusive pedagogical approaches
• Commitment to creating high-quality learning environments that respect diverse perspectives and comply with federal non-discrimination laws
• Demonstrated ability to conduct publishable research and pursue external funding

Preferred:

• PhD in social work or social welfare
• MSW degree from a CSWE-Accredited Institution
• At least two years post-MSW, full-time social work experience
• Familiarity with CSWE accreditation standards and evolving federal compliance requirements (e.g., Title IX)
