Assistant Professor, Exercise Science

The Department of Physical Education, Sport, and Human Performance (PESH) at Winthrop University is seeking an innovative and involved tenure-track assistant professor to serve as Internship and Field Experience Coordinator and teach in an established Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science program. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Commission on Accreditation of Exercise Science (CoAES). The program will be seeking accreditation with Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE). The individual will collaborate with other faculty to ensure that undergraduate students interested in pursuing exercise science receive high-quality didactic education and exceptional internship and field experiences. We seek a candidate who will be an exemplary leader, teacher, scholar, and active participant in the college, on campus, with community partners, and in professional organizations.

Position Responsibilities     

• Serve as the Internship and Field Experience Coordinator for the Exercise Science program;
• Maintain comprehensive records of student internship and field experiences;
• Teach courses in exercise science, strength and conditioning, health, and other related fields at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
• Support the vision for program initiatives, curriculum development, and accreditation;
• Serve as a productive faculty member in all areas of university expectations (student intellectual development, scholarly activity, professional stewardship, and academic responsibility);
• Actively engage in student recruitment and selection processes;
• Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students;
• Foster collaborative relationships with sport, allied health, and other organizations to develop internship and field experience placements and opportunities for collaborative service to the profession;
• Use technology to enhance student learning, increase access, maintain program data, and facilitate recruitment and retention efforts; and
• Engage in teaching and other program-related activities in the evenings, online, and occasional weekends, as needed.

Required Qualifications       

• Doctorate with specialization in exercise science, strength and conditioning or closely related field (ABD with completion by summer 2027 will be considered);
• Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential;
• Experience as a provider of exercise science or strength and conditioning services to clients or patients;
• Foundation for successful collegiate teaching;
• Foundation for active scholarship; and
• Ability to work collaboratively with departmental and other university members

Preferred Qualifications       

• Experience with CASCE and/or CoAES accreditation procedures;
• Experience supervising exercise science or strength and conditioning internship and field experiences; 
• Demonstrated ability in the use of technology and online learning for instructional purposes;
• Demonstrated ability to use technology for student record keeping and management;
• Experience working with underrepresented students and students from at-risk backgrounds; and
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas of exercise science or strength and conditioning: exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, exercise prescription, athlete assessment and performance, and military and tactical athlete performance.

Employment Conditions      

Position is full-time, nine-month, tenure-track with the possibility of summer employment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
