Job Description

Assistant Reference Librarian (Part-Time) under general supervision, analyzes clientele needs, interprets University Library & Archives resources, and facilitates their use by students, faculty, support staff, and other members of the academic community.

A Presidential Proclamation issued on September 19, 2025, imposes a $100,000 fee on all new H‑1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025, and Texas A&M University–Central Texas will not pay this fee. Additionally, a moratorium issued by Governor Abbott on January 27, 2026, restricts the filing of new H‑1B petitions unless approved by the Texas Workforce Commission. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Facilitates the use of library and archives resources, including the online library catalog, electronic databases, print and non-print indexes, abstracts, reference materials, and online and Internet resources.
• Provides advanced customer service, including using virtual reference and chat support venues for library users.
• Conducts clientele interviews to recommend effective and appropriate information resources.
• Responds to escalated requests for assistance and more complex, non-routine resource questions as a subject matter expert. Refers to sources, places, and individuals when local sources are insufficient.
• Provides explanations and instructions for department/unit employees. Provides support for a range of in-depth, specialized questions in research resources and databases.
• Creates and edits departmental publications, as requested.
• Analyzes and organizes operations and determines problem resolutions.
• Provides staffing for the research help desk during evening and weekend hours as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• Master’s degree in Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Requirements

Physical Requirements – Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items. Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.

Preferred Qualification:

• Two years in an academic library, public library, specialized library, archive, or other related educational setting. Professional library experience preferred.

Wage: $22 per hour

Hours: Work hours are typically scheduled on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Hours are confirmed by the supervisor.

Supervision of Others: This position has limited supervision of employees during scheduled evening or weekend hours. Unexpected issues will be communicated to the assigned manager in a timely manner.

Work Location: This is not a remote position. The selected candidate will be required to work on campus.
