The work of the Division of Oncology bridges the worlds of basic science, clinical diagnosis and the treatment of cancer. Our basic investigative activities concentrate on immunology, genetics/genomics, pharmacology, DNA repair and oncogene action. Our clinical science covers each cancer type; has a strong focus in clinical trials of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and in correlative laboratory studies. Our work is supported by a portfolio of peer-reviewed grants, industrial agreements and research endowments.

The Betof Lab studies mechanisms of response and resistance to cell therapy in solid tumors, with the goal of informing treatment decisions and developing novel therapies. A central focus is the engineering and optimization of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, including understanding components of efficacy such as ex vivo cell expansion, viability, and potency, work that is critical to the evaluation of novel TIL therapies in preclinical models and clinical development.

The Life Science Research Professional 3 (LSRP 3) will conduct both independent research and serve as lab manager for a growing translational immunotherapy laboratory group. The LSRP 3 will apply expert knowledge of cellular therapy techniques and immunology to complex, rapidly changing research projects, and will lead the design, planning, and execution of a central project focused on optimizing TIL therapy, including the generation of engineered TILs and their evaluation in murine models. The LSRP 3 will plan, assign and direct research duties and oversee general lab functions including ordering and maintenance. The LSRP 3 will also develop new protocols and standard operating procedures for the laboratory and apply new research methodologies to ongoing problems.

Responsibilities

Core Duties:

  • Design research approaches for a major portion of researchproject(s), including background research, experimental design andexecution, problem solving, and writing up for publication.

  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety ofapproaches.

  • Conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintaindetailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpretresearch data resulting from original procedures and methods.

  • Assist with new research proposals and applications for fundingand grants.

  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on allphases of the research project.

  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams across differentfaculties or schools.

  • Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers forpublication, especially in the results section. May be a co-author onpublications. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues atacademic conferences.

  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with newprocedures and related research; propose new research directions basedon new advances discussed in literature.

  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision ofprincipal investigator or business manager.

  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complieswith regulations and all required trainings.

  • Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed,including hiring, performance management, and related duties. Provideinstruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

Minimum Education andExperience

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years ofrelevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientificfield and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related sciencefield.

  • General computer skills, experience with databases and scientificapplications, and ability to quickly learn and master computerprograms.
