The Center for Family Research conducts pioneering research on the ways in which stress affects family relationships, youth development, and adult health, with an emphasis on Black American populations in the southern United States. We study how families and individuals thrive in the face of stress from social and environmental stressors like racism and poverty. Central to this research is the translation of basic research on development and health into empirically proven preventive interventions that leverage the strengths of families to promote family well-being.

Research, Data Analysis, and Scientific Products: Conduct quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and/or interdisciplinary analyses related to maternal health, racial trauma and stress, community-engaged research, and health across the lifespan. Lead and collaborate on peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference presentations, abstracts, reports, and other scientific products.

Research Project Implementation and Coordination: Contribute to the implementation of NIH-funded and Center-based research projects, including study protocol development and refinement, participant recruitment and retention activities, data collection, data management, regulatory activities, and coordination with collaborating investigators and research staff.

Community-Engaged Research and Dissemination: Collaborate with community partners and research participants to support community-engaged research activities. Participate in community meetings, advisory activities, dissemination of research findings, and development of accessible research products for community and stakeholder audiences.

Grant Development and Professional Development: Contribute to the development of grant proposals and new research initiatives. Participate in structured professional development related to scientific writing, grant development, interdisciplinary team science, community-engaged research, and development of an independent research program.

Mentorship and Research Team Activities: Mentor and collaborate with graduate and undergraduate trainees; participate in research team meetings, seminars, Center activities, and other scholarly activities associated with the Center for Family Research and collaborating research programs.

This research-focused postdoctoral fellowship will provide opportunities to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of investigators, research staff, community partners, and trainees across multiple research projects. The postdoctoral associate will contribute to research examining how social and contextual experiences, including experiences of racism and other forms of chronic and traumatic stress, shape maternal health and health across the lifespan. A central emphasis of the position is translating rigorous research into knowledge and approaches that are meaningful and useful to communities. The postdoctoral associate will have opportunities to participate in multiple stages of the research process, including study implementation and project coordination; quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed-methods data analysis; manuscript preparation; dissemination of findings to scientific and community audiences; development of grant proposals; and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate trainees. Depending on the candidate’s expertise and interests, opportunities may also include work with biological, physiological, behavioral, or other health-related data. The fellowship is designed to support the development of an independent program of research. The postdoctoral associate will receive mentorship in scientific writing, grant development, community-engaged research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and career development and will be encouraged to develop manuscripts and projects aligned with their own emerging research interests using available data and resources.

This is a full-time, one-year research-focused postdoctoral position.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant social, behavioral, public health, or life science discipline, including but not limited to psychology, sociology, public health, neuroscience, genetics, human development and family science, or a closely related field

• Demonstrated interest in research related to maternal health, racial trauma and stress, community-engaged research, health disparities, and/or health and well-being across the lifespan.
• Strong training in quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, biological, or other research methodologies relevant to social, behavioral, or health science research.
• Ability to analyze and interpret research data and contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications.
• Strong scientific writing, oral communication, organizational, and project-management skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary research teams that include investigators, research staff, students, healthcare professionals, and community partners.
• Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple research activities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
• Commitment to respectful, reciprocal, and culturally responsive engagement with research participants and community partners.
• Ability to communicate research findings effectively to both scientific and non-academic audiences.
• Evidence of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications and/or manuscripts in preparation.
• Interest in developing an independent program of research and pursuing external research funding.

Work is primarily conducted in an office, research, community, and/or remote work environment. The position requires extended periods of computer use; participation in in-person and virtual meetings; and occasional travel to research, community, or partner sites.
