The Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for multiple tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at all ranks.
We seek outstanding researchers and educators who will contribute to the continued growth, excellence, and intellectual breadth of the Department. The Department has substantial research strengths spanning artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer systems, architecture, cyber-physical systems, human-centered computing, robotics and autonomous systems, security, privacy, and cryptography, software engineering and programming languages, and algorithms and theory. We are particularly interested in candidates who will enhance and connect with the university’s AI research initiatives in both foundational and applied AI research, but also welcome applications across the full spectrum of computer science, including foundational research, emerging areas of computing, interdisciplinary research, and work that creates connections across established fields.
The primary responsibilities for these tenured/tenure-track positions include developing an internationally recognized research program, teaching and mentoring, and service to the department, university, public, and professional community. The appointment rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

These connections foster opportunities for foundational and interdisciplinary research spanning computing, science, engineering, health, and society.
Computer Science plays a key role in several major interdisciplinary research efforts at UVA. The Department is a founding member of the Link Lab, a multidisciplinary research center bringing together researchers in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and systems engineering to advance cyber-physical systems, robotics, autonomous systems, and the Internet of Things. CS faculty are also deeply engaged with UVA’s Biocomplexity Institute, university-wide efforts in artificial intelligence and data science, and interdisciplinary initiatives spanning health, biotechnology, neuroscience, and digital technology and society.
UVA is making substantial investments in computing and artificial intelligence research, including state-of-the-art high-performance computing and GPU infrastructure for large-scale AI, machine learning, data analytics, and computational science, and university-wide AI initiatives for researchers at all stages. These investments complement a growing university-wide community working on both the foundations of AI and its applications across science, engineering, health, and society.
The Department offers Ph.D. and master’s degrees through the School of Engineering and Applied Science and bachelor’s degrees through both the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Arts & Sciences. Computer Science also collaborates with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to jointly administer UVA’s undergraduate and graduate Computer Engineering programs.

QualifiationsCandidates must have received a doctorate or equivalent in a computing field by the start of their appointment. Evidence of a commitment to high-impact scholarship, funded research, undergraduate- and graduate-level teaching and advising excellence, professional and university service, and mentoring are expected.
