Position Summary

The School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University is seeking a Budget Coordinator to play a central role in maintaining the success of the financial and operational organization in one of the largest academic departments on campus. The position combines detailed budget coordination with administrative support and serves as a central point of contact for faculty, staff, students, and campus departments on a wide range of fiscal and procedural matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • SDSU Budget Support: Partner with the Operations Coordinator and Dean's office to drive the School's financial operations by coordinating and reconciling SDSU and Foundation budgets, managing purchases and reimbursements, and preparing budget summaries and reports. Partnering with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and campus teams, you will serve as a resource to navigate financial processes, resolve issues, and ensure resources are used effectively.
  • Administrative Support and Operations: Help create a welcoming, organized environment by coordinating events, shared spaces, administrative systems, and day-to-day operations. As a trusted point of contact, provide responsive guidance and improve workflows that help students, faculty, and staff succeed.
  • Faculty Onboarding and Startup Fund Activities: Help welcome new faculty seamlessly by coordinating recruitment, onboarding, travel, purchasing, and startup funds. Guide faculty through university processes and secure equipment, supplies, and services needed to establish laboratories and research activities.

    Position Information

    • Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
    • Position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
    • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
    • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

    Department Summary

    The School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences is one of the largest academic departments at San Diego State University, serving over 2,200 students across undergraduate and graduate programs. The School offers B.S. and M.S. degrees across disciplines in Kinesiology, Foods and Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Food Science, and Athletic Training. With strong ties to community and clinical partners, the School emphasizes applied learning, research excellence, and workforce readiness in the health sciences.

    Education and Experience

    Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite. 

    These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

    Key Qualifications

  • Experience in requisitioning and purchasing supplies, services and equipment.
  • Experience with standard purchasing policy and procedures and/or accounts payable.
  • Demonstrated experience tracking complex expenditure budgets.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and external community partners.
  • Experience at CSU or other academic environments is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience with purchasing and budget tracking is preferred.
  • Experience in travel coordination and execution is preferred.

    Compensation:
    Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department's budget and equity guidelines.

  • Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 1 ($4,047).
  • Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the CSUEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,047 – $5,896 per month (Step 1 – Step 20).
  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
