Assistant and Associate Professor, Athletic Training

The Department of Physical Education, Sport, and Human Performance (PESH) at Winthrop University is seeking two faculty in Athletic Training. Through this search we seek innovative and engaged tenure-track faculty. One position is at the associate professor rank and the second is at the assistant professor rank. Both faculty will teach in an established and evolving Master of Science in Athletic Training program. One position will include the Director of Clinical Education responsibilities. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The individuals will collaborate with other faculty to ensure that graduate students and undergraduate students interested in pursuing athletic training receive high-quality didactic education, practice remains congruent with disciplinary standards, and clinical experiences meet the needs of health care professionals in training. We seek candidates who will be exemplary leaders, teachers, scholars, and active participants in the college, on campus, with community partners, and professional organizations.

Position Responsibilities     

• Teach courses in athletic training, exercise science, and health at the graduate and undergraduate levels;
• Contribute to program initiatives, curriculum development, and accreditation;
• Serve as a productive faculty member in all areas of university expectations (student intellectual development, scholarly activity, professional stewardship, and academic responsibility);
• Lead efforts to develop and maintain strong cohorts, including recruitment and selection processes;
• Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students;
• Foster collaborative relationships with medical and sport organizations to develop clinical experience placements and opportunities for service to the profession.;
• Use technology to enhance student learning, increase access, maintain program data, and facilitate recruitment and retention efforts; and
• Engage in teaching and other program-related activities in the evenings, summers (this is a 12-month program), online, and occasional weekends, as needed.

Required Qualifications       

• Doctorate with specialization in athletic training or closely related field (ABD with completion by summer 2027 will be considered);
• Current Board of Certification (BOC) credential;
• Eligible for licensure as an athletic trainer in South Carolina;
• Experience as a provider of athletic training services to scholastic, intercollegiate, or professional athletes or other clinical sites;
• Record of successful collegiate teaching (required for associate rank and desired for assistant rank);
• Record of scholarly / creative work (required for associate rank and foundation to develop record is required at the assistant rank);
• Ability to work collaboratively with department colleagues and other members of the university community

Preferred Qualifications       

• Experience with CAATE accreditation procedures;
• Previous experience teaching in a CAATE-accredited program;
• Experience supervising and/or establishing athletic training clinical experiences;
• Demonstrated ability in the use of simulation, technology, and online learning for instructional purposes;
• Demonstrated ability to use technology for student record keeping and management;
• Experience working with underrepresented students and students from at-risk backgrounds;
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas: evidence-based practice, therapeutic interventions, administration, research and writing, and the implementation of standardized patients for instructional purposes.

Employment Conditions      

The positions are full-time, nine-month, tenure-track with an expectation of summer employment paid based on credits taught and enrollment. The nine-month salary is commensurate with qualifications and rank.
