Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:JOB SUMMARY:Under close supervision, the Mechanic Assistant provides entry-level support to skilled mechanics by assisting with preventive maintenance, basic inspections, and routine servicing of university vehicles and equipment. This position supports daily fleet and shop operations by performing manual tasks, preparing vehicles for service, maintaining tools and workspaces, and adhering to established safety procedures. The role is designed as a developmental position with on-the-job training.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This is an entry-level fleet maintenance support role. Work is performed under direct supervision and does not include independent diagnosis, advanced troubleshooting, or major mechanical repairs. The position serves as a training pathway toward higher-level mechanic classifications.
- Assists mechanic with preventative maintenance on university vehicles including buses, cars, trucks, vans, and other fleet equipment.
- Data entry for University fleet
- Supports oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, lubrication, and basic service tasks as directed.
- Assists with dismantling, assembling, and reassembling vehicle or equipment components.
- Transports tools, parts, and materials to and from work areas.
- Move vehicles and equipment within the shop or yard to prepare for service or storage.
- Cleans, organizes, and maintains shop work areas, tools, and equipment to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Assists with basic inspections, troubleshooting, and diagnostic testing under supervision.
- Unloads deliveries and assists with stocking shop supplies.
- Follows safety procedures and uses required personal protective equipment.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Range:$19.53 - $24.90
Education:High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
Required Licensing/Certification:Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
Certified forklift operator preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Basic automotive and mechanical concepts; shop safety practices; proper use of hand and power tools.
- Assisting with vehicle and equipment maintenance; handling tools and materials safely; following instructions and procedures.
Skill in:

Ability to:
- Perform physically demanding work; work effectively under supervision; communicate effectively; learn mechanical repair techniques.

- Previous experience in a mechanical helper or related role preferred; on-the-job training may be provided.
- Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.
- Reach and grasp objects; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, lift, or crawl.
- Requires manual dexterity and physical exertion.
- Exposure to fumes, dust, oils, chemicals, loud noise, and extreme temperatures.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
