Job Description Summary, Duties and Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Preferred Qualifications
As the largest college at the University of Rhode Island, the College of Arts and Sciences brings together and supports undergraduate programs across the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences seeks part-time faculty to teach sociology courses on a per-course basis. For Fall 2026 we seek someone able to teach SOC100, Introduction to the Sociological Perspective, and/or SOC212, Sociology of the Family. These courses meet in-person on MWF for Fall 2026 and are at the undergraduate level.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A selected candidate will teach one (1) or two (2) courses in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Part-time faculty are not required to engage in research or service activities but must hold regular office hours and be available to assist students enrolled in their courses. They are expected to stay current in their fields of instruction and with pedagogical methods and instructional technologies. Most courses are three (3) credits. In-person courses meet for approximately three (3) hours per week over the course of an approximately fourteen (14) week semester. Classes meet during the day at the Kingston campus.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. Master's or doctoral degree in sociology, or a closely related field with substantial background in sociology at time of application.
2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred:
1. Experience teaching sociology or closely related field at the college level.
2. Experience teaching in one or more of the following areas: Introductory sociology, sociology of the family at the college level.

Four campuses, one community
URI’s main campus is located on 1,248 acres in rural Kingston, where the campus core — including a quadrangle surrounded by handsome granite buildings — is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Six miles from Rhode Island’s beaches, this campus is conveniently situated along the Boston to New York corridor. The University’s renowned Graduate School of Oceanography is located at the 165-acre Narragansett Bay Campus. The Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies brings higher education to downtown Providence. Nearby, the 133,000-square-foot Rhode Island Nursing Education Center includes unparalleled simulation labs. The W. Alton Jones Campus — 2,300 acres of forests, lakes, and farmland in West Greenwich — provides a secluded setting for academic research, environmental education, business meetings and special events.
Investing in the future
Since 2007, the University has invested $607 million in campus capital projects, including: a $150 million engineering complex, due to open in 2019; Brookside, another new apartment-style residence hall, 2019; a Welcome Center, 2018; the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center, 2017; Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences, 2016; and Avedisian Hall, home to the College of Pharmacy, 2012.

The University is home to several centers of expertise that tackle some of society’s most vexing challenges. The George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience brings multi-disciplinary research to bear on devastating brain diseases, such as ALS and Alzheimer’s.
