Embodied AI and Robotics (AIR) Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking a Junior Research Scientist to support technology translation research involving artificial intelligence, robotics, assistive technologies, and human-centered systems. The successful applicant will contribute to transforming emerging research outcomes into practical prototypes and deployable solutions that address real-world challenges in accessibility, inclusive mobility, and smart urban environments. Applicants from all academic and professional backgrounds are encouraged to apply, particularly those with relevant technical, research, analytical, project development, or technology translation experience. Terms of employment include a competitive salary and benefits.

Research at AIR focuses on developing interdisciplinary, technology-driven solutions for sustainable, resilient, inclusive, and human-centered cities. The Junior Research Scientist will work on projects that bridge fundamental research and real-world application, with particular emphasis on translating advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and human-computer interaction into usable technologies.

The role may involve supporting the evaluation of AI-powered assistive technologies for people with disabilities, including systems for accessible navigation, communication, public services, and urban mobility. Initial projects may include the translation of research prototypes into pilot-ready systems for deployment in environments such as transportation hubs, public institutions, hospitals, campuses, and commercial facilities.

The Junior Research Scientist will collaborate with researchers, engineers, industry partners, government entities, community stakeholders, and prospective users to identify practical requirements and evaluate the technical and social impact of proposed solutions. The position also provides opportunities to contribute to new research directions related to technology translation, responsible AI, inclusive design, and the practical adoption of emerging technologies.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Translating research concepts and experimental systems into functional, user-oriented prototypes.
  • Supporting the design, development, integration, testing, and evaluation of AI- and robotics-based technologies.
  • Conducting literature reviews and technology landscape analyses to identify relevant research, technical approaches, and application opportunities.
  • Collecting, processing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative research data.
  • Supporting user studies, field evaluations, pilot deployments, and demonstrations in real-world environments.
  • Engaging with researchers, end users, community representatives, government entities, and industry partners to understand requirements and gather feedback.
  • Assessing the technical feasibility, usability, accessibility, scalability, and potential impact of research technologies.
  • Preparing technical documentation, research reports, presentations, project proposals, and materials for academic or external stakeholders.
  • Coordinating project activities and supporting the day-to-day management of technology translation initiatives.
  • Contributing to research publications, grant proposals, intellectual property documentation, and technology commercialization activities where appropriate.

Candidates must hold a bachelor's or master's degree (or equivalent) in any field. Applicants with less than five years of professional experience are encouraged to apply. Individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds are welcome to apply, particularly those who can demonstrate relevant technical, research, analytical, project development, or technology translation experience.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience developing, integrating, or evaluating research prototypes.
  • An ability to understand academic research and translate technical findings into practical system requirements and applications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and project-coordination skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • A demonstrated interest in technology translation, responsible innovation, accessibility, assistive technology, smart cities, or inclusive urban design.

Experience with user-centered design, field studies, stakeholder engagement, product development, technology commercialization, or deployment of AI systems in real-world environments is highly desirable. Organizational skills, independence, adaptability, and attention to detail are essential.

Applications will be accepted immediately. To be considered, applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript or copy of their highest degree, statement of research interests, and contact information for at least two references or recommendation letters. All application materials should be submitted in PDF format.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. Questions regarding the position may be directed to Professor Yi Fang at yfang@nyu.edu.

  • NYU Abu Dhabi stimulates advanced research. The NYUAD Institute is a major research center. Research is integral to the undergraduate experience at NYU Abu Dhabi, and it will also drive the University's graduate programs.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York form the backbone of a fully connected global network university. As one of the two major hubs in the global network, NYUAD creates a unique capacity for faculty and students to access the assets of the entire university system.
