Description:
The Department of Neuroscience at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise is required in the specific area of neural development, axon guidance, neuronal specification, or neural circuit assembly; experience working with Drosophila and/or mouse model systems; a strong background in molecular genetics, genomics, transcriptional regulation, and developmental neuroscience; demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals; and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
Responsibilities may include designing and conducting independent research projects; performing molecular, genetic, genomic, and biochemical experiments; analyzing and interpreting data; preparing manuscripts and presentations; collaborating with laboratory members; and contributing to the broader scientific mission of the laboratory.
The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop and lead studies focused on the mechanisms controlling axon guidance and neuronal specification during nervous system development in both fly and mouse models. Research projects will investigate transcriptional and signaling networks downstream of the Frazzled (Fra) and Deleted in Colorectal Cancer (DCC) receptors that direct neural circuit assembly and neuronal differentiation. These studies aim to elucidate how receptor-mediated transcriptional programs contribute to the formation of functional neural circuits and how disruptions in these pathways lead to neurodevelopmental disorders.
Candidates with experience investigating transcriptional networks regulated by Fra/DCC receptor signaling and their roles in neural circuit development are especially encouraged to apply. Such expertise will provide valuable contributions to ongoing studies examining the genetic and molecular mechanisms governing neuronal connectivity and will support the candidate's development toward an independent research career.

Vision
As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.
Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
