The Department of Applied Mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School, in Monterey, California invites applications for multiple full-time, tenure-track positions at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. Exceptional candidates at all levels may be considered.

The Mission of the Department of Applied Mathematics

The Department of Applied Mathematics has a multifaceted mission to provide an exceptional mathematical education focused on the unique needs of NPS students, to conduct relevant research, and to provide service to the broader community. The department offers master’s and doctoral degrees and encourages mathematical explorations in a broad range of areas in applied mathematics with specific thrust areas that support the mission of the school.

Position Description

We seek candidates who can teach a wide range of courses (course listings can be found at https://nps.edu/web/math/courses) primarily as on-campus lecturers. Candidates will also be expected to conduct an active program of research and to direct student theses.

Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position will possess a doctorate in Mathematics or a closely related area from an accredited university. Teaching experience is highly desirable, and evidence of exceptional research potential is necessary. All areas of research will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates specializing in areas of computational applied mathematics and discrete mathematics, that support existing departmental research efforts (https://nps.edu/web/math/people) or new areas that amplify existing portfolio. Effective teaching is essential, and candidates must have excellent communication skills (both written and oral), as well as strong interpersonal and organizational abilities. U.S. citizenship is required.

Institution and Setting

The Naval Postgraduate School (www.nps.edu) was established in 1909 and offers graduate programs at all levels for officers of the United States Armed Services, civilian employees of defense laboratories, and officers and civilians from allied nations. The NPS has approximately 1500 resident students enrolled in graduate degree programs, as well as non-resident students served by a distance-learning program. The Department of Applied Mathematics has 17 tenure track and non-tenure track faculty members and offers both master’s and PhD degrees. The park-like 144-acre campus is located on the Monterey Peninsula, adjacent to the waters of Monterey Bay and only minutes from the Monterey Regional Airport. The area offers a pristine environment of unparalleled scenic beauty, parks, restaurants, art galleries and cultural events. Other local research and educational institutions include the California State University at Monterey Bay, the University of California at Santa Cruz, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, the Defense Language Institute, Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, the Naval Research Laboratory (Marine Meteorology Division), and Monterey Peninsula College.

Salary and Benefits

Naval Postgraduate School faculty are employed as excepted-status federal civil servants on a salary scale that is competitive with other universities. Faculty are eligible for the health insurance, life insurance, and retirement benefits available to all federal government employees. Academic appointments and salary for these positions will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
