Asbestos Construction Project Specialist

SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University is the principal health and safety office at Stanford University. We support and advance the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. Our mission is to provide and coordinate programs and services that minimize safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks in a manner consistent with fiscal and environmental stewardship. We are comprised of 9 technical groups with more than 50 specialists who work in the field with top researchers, faculty, staff, and students to support the mission and research of Stanford University. The work environment is team-oriented, collaborative, deadline-driven, and dynamic. In addition to providing routine EH&S program services, our staff provides support as needed during university emergencies. All EH&S staff are to comply with governmental regulations and University policies and procedures regarding health and safety and are expected to serve as strong models and advocates for research health and safety. 

EH&S seeks an Asbestos Construction Project Specialist to join the Healthy Buildings Program team. Reporting to the Healthy Buildings Manager of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Group, you will ensure the proper execution of institutional occupational safety and health programs relating to construction, renovation, and demolition projects. Primary responsibilities include oversight of asbestos, lead, and PCBs identification/ removal as part of hazardous materials safety and management. ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES:
● Perform asbestos and lead building surveys, managing hazardous materials removal/ abatement jobs, conducting inspections/ airborne fiber analysis, characterizing waste, and arranging disposal.
● Work with Project Managers to scope, develop, and implement project plans for managing hazardous materials.
● Coordinate laboratory decommissioning efforts, including hazard assessment, decontamination, and waste disposal.
● Provide consultation to Facilities, Student Housing, and other University departments regarding asbestos-containing materials information.
● Reviewing vendor contracts and keeping updated records of projects service costs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field. Three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) registered in the State of California, or eligible to achieve certification.
● CDPH Lead Inspector/Assessor or Lead Project Monitor certification(s)
● Industrial hygiene workplace exposure assessment, including personal and area air sampling/ monitoring.
● Work experience in an academic/research environment

Core Duties:

• Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, andprocedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health ofemployees and the community.

• May develop and conduct employee and student training, education,and awareness of environmental, safety and health activities, and/orprograms.

• Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including butnot limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) thatcould be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommendimprovements to minimize hazard potential.

• Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaintsconcerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace.

• Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, andoperating equipment to minimize hazard potential.

• Provide technical advice and university interpretation of variousgovernment regulations and university policies; maintain workingknowledge of specific government regulations.

• May act as a lead or technical expert, and provide direction toless experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientificfield

Minimum Experience:

Three years progressively responsible experience in occupationalsafety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science,and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination ofeducation and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safetysurveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, anddata analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/riskcontrol.

• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing withdiverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly andconcisely.

• Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specificgovernment agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, andpermits) and university policies.

• Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects ofvarious regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned workarea(s).
