JOB PURPOSE:
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for providing research and administrative support for the PI’s laboratory.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
None
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include administrators, program staff, faculty, principal investigator and students of Howard University. External contacts Include representatives from other universities, federal agencies, and industry.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
· Maintenance of laboratory fly stocks
· Executing research experiments under the mentorship of the PI, documenting their research in a laboratory notebook
· Training students and new staff in routine laboratory techniques and protocols
· Presenting their work at lab meetings, local seminars, and local/national conferences
· Help organize lab consumables and ordering
· Contribute to routine lab maintenance tasks (e.g., autoclaving, cleaning)
· Performs other duties as assigned
CORE COMPETENCIES:
· Experience with wet laboratory biology research (e.g., use of pipettes, lab notebooks)
· Intermediate to advanced skill in Word and Excel (or similar programs)
· Ability to apply complex analytical concepts and verify the accuracy of data presented for processing and makes recommendation for resolution;
· Ability to define instructions, adhere to a changing system of specific policies and procedures
· Competence in both oral and written English to communicate in a clear and concise manner;
· Ability to be well organized and highly attentive to detail;
· Ability to work as part of a team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology or closely related field. Experience with Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) is not required but strongly preferred.
