Life Science Research Professional 1

The Kalinowski Laboratory within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University is seeking a highly motivated and exceptionally organized Research Professional to play a foundational role in launching a new neuroimmune laboratory focused on synapse biology in psychiatry. This position offers a unique hybrid opportunity, blending critical hands-on research with the responsibility of architecting the lab's operational infrastructure. The is a 1 Year Fixed Term position. 

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have:

A unique blend of hands-on research skills and operational/managerial talent. You are equally excited by executing a complex experiment and by designing an efficient system to organize lab reagents.

Proven experience in core laboratory techniques. This includes significant hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture (especially iPS cells), fluorescent microscopy, and key molecular biology methods (DNA/RNA isolation, Western blotting, CRISPR).

An exceptional level of organization and meticulous attention to detail. You maintain immaculate records, create robust data management workflows (e.g., using Redcap, Benchling), and take pride in the precise tracking of samples and supplies.

A proactive, problem-solving mindset and a strong sense of ownership. You don’t wait to be told what to do. You anticipate lab needs, troubleshoot technical issues independently, and are committed to the careful maintenance of cell lines and equipment, even if it requires occasional work after hours or on weekends.

The vision and drive to be a founding member of a new lab. You are resourceful and enjoy the challenge of building systems from the ground up, including communicating with vendors, sourcing equipment, and establishing the protocols that will be the foundation of the lab’s success.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills. You are capable of clearly documenting and presenting your work, contributing to manuscripts and grants, and effectively training junior lab members on procedures and safety.

A desire to continuously learn and grow. You are intellectually curious, actively stay current with scientific literature to optimize protocols, and are eager to deepen your expertise in neuroscience, immunology, and stem cell biology.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

At least 1 year of experience working in an academic or industry basic science or clinical laboratory. Experienced with fluorescent microscopy, iPS cell culture and molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA isolation and Western blotting. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills; organizational skills; is flexible and willing to work as part of a team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Core Duties:

• Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects inlab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.

• Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records ofexperiments and outcomes.

• Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline tointerpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestionsregarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaborationwith senior researcher.

• Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with newprocedures and apply learnings to related research.

• Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate inthe preparation of written documents, including procedures,presentations, and proposals.

• Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock,manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general labsupport as needed.

• Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students onlab procedures or techniques.

Minimum Education andExperience

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
