Life Science Research Professional 1

The Stanford University Department of Neurosurgery seeks a part-time LSRP1 (50% FTE) to perform research and general laboratory management. Examples include but are not limited to assisting scientists in in vitro and in vivo experiments, such as animal surgery, animal imaging, drug administration, tissue collection, immunohistochemistry, tissue culture, immunocytochemistry, microscopy, and basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques. In addition to independently planning, conducting, and interpreting experiments, the LSRP1 would support day to day activities of the lab, including but not limited to equipment maintenance and regulatory compliance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Human Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field. 
• Experience working with animal and human tissues. 
• Previous experience in rodent animal models is highly desired. 
• Experience with lab management is a plus. 
• Proficiency with basic molecular biology techniques, such as gel electrophoresis and immunocytochemistry.
• Experience with mammalian tissue culture techniques, including microscopy. 
• Highly motivated, dedicated, and independent. 
• Strong team player. 
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

• Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds. 
• Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts. 
• Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls. 
• Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
• Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
• Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.

Core Duties:

• Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects inlab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.

• Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records ofexperiments and outcomes.

• Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline tointerpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestionsregarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaborationwith senior researcher.

• Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with newprocedures and apply learnings to related research.

• Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate inthe preparation of written documents, including procedures,presentations, and proposals.

• Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock,manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general labsupport as needed.

• Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students onlab procedures or techniques.

Minimum Education andExperience

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstratedperformance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

• Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of scienceprincipals to problem solve work.

• Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments andoutcomes.

• General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and mastercomputer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
