JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor for Undergraduate Admissions represents Southern University to prospective students, families, schools, and community organizations. This position supports the University’s enrollment goals by generating prospective student interest, increasing inquiries and applications, and assisting students throughout the admissions process from initial contact through enrollment.

The Admissions Counselor works collaboratively with the Admissions Team to develop and implement recruitment strategies designed to achieve established enrollment goals. The position requires excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills and maintains a high level of professionalism in all interactions with prospective students and other stakeholders, including interviews, phone calls, emails, information sessions, recruitment events, and campus visits.

The Admissions Counselor also assists with recruitment initiatives through events, referrals, digital and print communications, and outreach to schools, community organizations, and other external groups. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and other University stakeholders.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Communicate with prospective students, parents, families, and community members through appointments, telephone calls, email, and other communication channels.Assist in the development of enrollment marketing materials and communications, including letters, brochures, email campaigns, social media content, and other recruitment materials.Utilize Slate and Banner CRM systems to track and manage prospective student data, generate reports, and support effective communication and outreach efforts.Present information about Southern University, its academic programs, admissions processes, student resources, and the benefits of a Southern University education at high schools, community colleges, recruitment events, and on-campus programs.Develop and maintain relationships with high schools, community colleges, community organizations, and other external partners to strengthen recruitment pipelines and partnerships.Collaborate with internal departments to develop and implement strategic enrollment initiatives using data and insights from CRM systems and other institutional resources.Advise prospective students and families regarding admissions requirements, transfer credits, financial aid opportunities, academic programs, and other enrollment-related matters.Organize and participate in community workshops, recruitment programs, retreats, on-site admissions events, and other enrollment-related activities.

    Maintain, monitor, and analyze recruitment data to evaluate the effectiveness of outreach initiatives and recommend opportunities for improvement.

    Develop and implement targeted recruitment strategies based on student enrollment, application, and retention trends.

    Support the development of departmental goals and objectives and recommend and implement improvements to recruitment processes and operations.

    Participate in the development and execution of communication workflows within Slate CRM to enhance engagement and responsiveness to prospective students.

    Maintain accurate prospective and current student information within institutional databases and ensure the confidentiality and appropriate handling of student records.

    Travel extensively to represent Southern University at recruitment events and activities, including occasional overnight and weekend travel.

    Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience in student services, admissions, recruitment, financial aid, academic advising, customer service, or a related area.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, organizational, and relationship-building skills.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.

  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and manage multiple priorities with strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze recruitment and enrollment data and apply findings to support recruitment strategies and decision-making.

  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize CRM, student information, and enrollment management systems.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle student information and records.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively, including occasional overnight travel.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends during peak recruitment and enrollment periods and University-sponsored events.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) to two (2) years of professional experience in admissions, student services, recruitment, financial aid, academic advising, or a related higher education environment.

  • Experience using Slate, Banner, PeopleSoft, or comparable CRM, student information, or enrollment management systems.

  • Experience with student recruitment, prospective student outreach, or enrollment management.

  • Experience working with financial aid processes and systems.

  • Experience developing or supporting recruitment communications, outreach campaigns, or enrollment initiatives.

  • Experience using recruitment or enrollment data to evaluate outreach efforts and support strategic decision-making.

Southern University opened its doors in 1880 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with 12 students, five faculty members, and a budget totaling $10,000. In 1914, the University was relocated to Louisiana's capital city - Baton Rouge.

The Southern University and A&M College System was created by the state legislature under the management of the Southern University Board of Supervisors. The University expanded to other cities in the state, establishing Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO), Southern University, Shreveport (SUSLA), the Southern University Law Center, and the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SUAREC).
